South Dakota State volleyball is set to host a pair of preseason competitions this weekend in preparation for the upcoming season. The Jackrabbits will take on Augustana at 7 p.m. Friday night in exhibition action before hosting its annual Blue vs. Yellow scrimmage Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Both matches will take place at Frost Arena and are open to the public with free admission. There will be no live coverage for either match.
The Jackrabbits are coming off a 19-12 (10-8 Summit) season that ended in the semifinal round of the Summit League tournament. SDSU finished better than .500 for the first time since 2012 both overall and in Summit League action and qualified for the postseason tournament for the first time since 2010. The Jacks upset No. 3 Denver in the opening round of the tournament which was the team's first win at the event since 2007.
SDSU returns five starters and 10 letterwinners from the 2021 squad, including All-Summit honorees
Crystal Burk and
Ella Thompson. Burk became the first Jackrabbit to earn a spot on the league's first team after averaging 3.75 kills and 2.68 digs per set in conference matches as a six-rotation player. She totaled 442 kills in 2021 and surpassed the 1,000 career kill mark in the final match of the regular season. Thompson was named to the all-freshman team following an outstanding first season in Brookings. She paced the SDSU defense with 106 total blocks and ranked third on the team in total kills with 194.
Following the preseason contests, SDSU opens the regular season at the Huskie Invitational in DeKalb, Illinois August 26-27. State is slated to take on Illinois - Chicago, Northern Illinois and New Jersey Institute of Technology at the tournament. The Jacks' official home opener is September 2 against Eastern Washington at Frost Arena as part of the two-day Comfort Suites Showcase.
