South Dakota State volleyball slipped to 6-7 (0-1) Saturday with a four-set loss (18-25, 19-25, 25-18, 20-25) to Denver at Frost Arena.
Crystal Burk paced the Jackrabbits with 14 digs, 13 kills and a pair of service aces.
Ella Thompson added nine kills and four blocks while matching Burk's two ace serves.
Sydney Andrews posted a team-best five blocks and chipped in three kills. Setter
Raegen Reilly gave out 33 assists and libero
Jadyn Makovicka notched 12 digs. As a team the Jackrabbits finished with 41 kills, eight aces, 51 digs and eight blocks while hitting .114.
Denver started hot in the opening set, hitting .714 on its way to an early 12-3 lead. The Jacks were forced to use both timeouts during the Pioneer run. Out of the second SDSU timeout Thompson notched a kill and then an ace serve, sparking an 8-2 stretch for the Jackrabbits that pulled the home team back within three. The Jacks trailed by only three again before Denver outscored SDSU 5-1 to end the set 25-18.
The Pioneers also led start to finish in game two. Denver led by as many as seven points and tallied 16 kills at a .324 clip during the set. SDSU started to pull away from Denver in set three with a five-point stretch to lead 13-9. The sides traded points again until the Jacks put together a 6-0 run to lead 23-16. Thompson notched a block and a kill to cap off the run.Â
Down 12-6 in the final game, the Jackrabbits mounted a comeback effort with six straight points for the 12-all tie. Tied again at 15, a six-point stretch for Denver made it a 21-15 game. Cadi Boyer ended the match for the Pioneers with one of her 11 kills.
Hailey Green (15) and Jordan Lockwood joined Boyer with double-digit kills for Denver. Lorin Poulter had 44 digs and Giana Bartalo had 23 digs.
NOTES
- SDSU is 1-2 in four-set matches this season.
- The Jackrabbits' eight ace serves matches their season high. It is the most aces in a four-set match this season.
- SDSU's .114 hitting percentage against the Pioneers matches its season low.
