The South Dakota State men's swimming and diving team sent out the 11 members of its senior class in style Saturday, recording a 177-110 victory over South Dakota in dual action at the Stanley J. Marshall Center.
The Jackrabbits improved to 10-5 in head-to-head competition this season after claiming 11 of 16 event titles.
Senior Spencer Fritze swept the diving events for SDSU, posting winning scores of 272.70 on the 1-meter board and 293.33 in the 3-meter competition. Fellow senior Zach Boyd was right behind with respective runner-up scores of 254.10 and 271.65.
In the swimming events, the Jackrabbits got another individual victory from a senior as Alex Kraft clipped Brookings native Matthew Sorbe at the wall in the 200-yard freestyle by one-tenth of a second, clocking a time of 1 minute, 44.46 seconds. Kraft would add a runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle (4:53.46) and would later team with Jon Galles, Rafael Negri and Eric Anderson for a winning time of 3:07.23 in the final event of the evening, the 400 freestyle relay.
Anderson, meanwhile, turned in an individual victory in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.24 seconds that came after he was out-touched by USD's Zach Kopp by the slimmest of margins — .01 seconds — in the 50 freestyle. Kopp recorded a time of 21.08 seconds, with Anderson coming in at 21.09 seconds.
Another closely contested race was the 200 butterfly final, where the top three finishers were separated by .52 seconds. The Jackrabbits' Braxton McGrath turned in a strong final length to move past USD's Griffin Wolner for a winning time of 1:56.86, with the Jackrabbits' Damon Venner taking third in 1:57.38.
Jackrabbit freshmen accounted for three more event titles as Aiden Carstensen won the 100 backstroke in 52.08 seconds and Jack Ellison was victorious in the two longest races of the meet, the 500 freestyle (4:51.01) and 1,000 freestyle (10:10.05).
Other winners for SDSU included Austin Smith in the 100 butterfly (51.54 seconds) and newcomer Denilson Cyprianos in the 200 backstroke (1:54.32). Carstensen added a runner-up time of 1:55.48 in the 200 back.
