SIOUX FALLS — Spencer Fritze swept the diving events, Denilson Cyprianos won the two longest races of the day and Austin Smith swam his way to a victory in record-setting fashion to highlight the South Dakota State men's swimming and diving team's performance Saturday at the Coyote Invitational.
A senior from Park Rapids, Minnesota, Fritze claimed the 1-meter competition with a score of 262 points over six dives, then upped his winning total on the 3-meter board to 271.25 points. Teammate Zach Boyd was runner-up in both events with respective scores of 235.75 and 252.75.
Cyprianos, a sophomore from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, began the day by winning the 400-yard individual medley during the morning session in 4 minutes, 7.45 seconds, then came back in the afternoon to win the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:09.40 that ranks sixth in program history.
Jackrabbit swimmers claimed three of the top five spots in both the 400 IM and mile; Braxton McGrath (4:11.92) and Alex Kraft (4:15.45) were third and fifth in the 400 IM, while Max White (16:50.99) and Matt Sorenson (17:39.54) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 1,650 freestyle.
Smith, a sophomore from The Woodlands, Texas, by way of Omaha, lowered his own school record in the 100 individual medley en route to an event title. His mark of 50.53 seconds shaved .36 seconds off his previous standard set last March at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship.
Smith's victory led an SDSU sweep of the top three spots in the 100 IM as Aiden Carstensen placed second in 51.70 seconds and Charles Sieglaff took third in 52.05 seconds. Smith also turned in a third-place effort in the 100 breaststroke, 56.53 seconds, with Gavin Wheeler taking fourth in 57.70 seconds.
In all, the Jackrabbit men combined to win eight event titles on Saturday, including individual victories from Eric Anderson in the 200 freestyle and Luke Nichols in the 200 butterfly. Anderson touched the wall in 1:41.41 for his 200 free victory and was followed by teammates Damon Venner in second place (1:43.39) and Jack Ellison with a fourth-place showing (1:44.76).
