FAIRFAX, Va. — Three South Dakota State wrestlers recorded top-six finishes Sunday at the A Better Way Athletics Patriot Open hosted by George Mason University.
Â
Leading the Jackrabbit trio was Bennett Berge with a runner-up finish in the 184-pound weight class. A redshirt freshman from Mantorville, Minnesota, Berge posted a 4-1 record on the day, with two wins each by major decision and technical fall. His major decisions came against Navy's Daniel Williams (14-3) in the opening round and versus Kevin Makosy of Maryland (11-2) in the quarterfinals, while his tech falls were recorded against Dalton Battle of Appalachian State (21-6) in the Round of 16 and Isaac Dean of Rider (17-1) in the semifinals.
Â
In the finals, the 19th-ranked Berge was matched up against Brock Delsignore of North Carolina State and dropped an 11-3 major decision.
Â
Placing third at 165 pounds was 15th-ranked Tanner Cook, who ended the day with a 3-1 record. Cook won his first match by a 9-7 decision against Ty Finn of Virginia Tech, then moved into the semifinals with a 21-second pin against Ryan Money of Maryland.
Â
Cook, a senior from Ilion, New York, was ousted from the championship bracket by fall early in the second period of his semifinal matchup against Derek Fields of North Carolina State (3:28), but needed only 18 seconds to pin Kaya Sement of Penn in the third-place bout.
Â
Completing the Jackrabbits' list of placewinners was Daniel Kimball, who notched a sixth-place finish in the 149-pound division with a 5-1 record. Kimball opened the day with an 11-4 victory over Penn's Sean Seefeldt before dropping a 5-1 decision to Lock Haven's Ty Linsenbigler. A senior from Buckingham, Iowa, Kimball then reeled off four consecutive victories in the wrestlebacks — two each by major decision and decision — in reaching the maximum of six matches in one day of competition.
Â
In other tournament action Sunday, twin brothers Moses and Marcus Espinoza-Owens each claimed weight-class titles at the Dragon Open hosted by Minnesota State, Moorhead.
Moses Espinoza-Owens went 3-0 on the day in the 157-pound Red Division, starting with a 20-5 technical fall over MSU, Moorhead's Jacob Cole. He followed with a 4-2 decision against Colton Bornholdt of St. Cloud State in the semifinals, then scored a 16-5 major decision over North Dakota State's Clay Radenz.
Â
Competing at 165 pounds, Marcus Espinoza-Owens recorded a pair of bonus-point victories en route to his title. After receiving a first-round bye, Espinoza-Owens won by technical fall, 26-10, over Izaak Hunsley of Northern State and then defeated James Burks of St. Cloud State by a 13-3 major decision. Espinoza-Owens was scheduled to meet Braydon Huber of the University of Mary in the championship, but Huber withdrew from the tournament, giving the Jackrabbit wrestler the title.
Â
Also wrestling in a championship match Sunday was 184-pounder Jaxon Bowes. The Brookings native wrestled only twice on Sunday, posting a 19-3 technical fall against Jacob Vaughan of St. John's (Minn.) before dropping a 6-3 decision against Northern State's Tyson Lien.

Other Jackrabbits to earn places Sunday at the Dragon Open were Parker Janssen, third at 141 pounds, and Riggin Boger, fourth at 184 pounds. Ryan Dolezal, who competed unattached, ended up fifth in the 157-pound Red Division.
