MINNEAPOLIS — Austin Smith set his second individual school record in as many days, the Jackrabbits established their fourth relay record and Aiden Carstensen earned a spot on the podium with a runner-up finish Friday to highlight Day 3 of the 2023 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships for the South Dakota State University men's squad.
After setting the SDSU record in the 200-yard individual medley on Thursday, Smith established a new Jackrabbit standard in the 100 butterfly twice on Friday at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. He clocked a then-record time of 48.66 in the morning prelims, then came back in the evening session with a tie of 48.64 seconds that was good for fifth place.
The previous Jackrabbit record in the 100 butterfly was 49.07 seconds by Cody Watkins in 2019.
Smith led a contingent of five Jackrabbits who all established top-10 times in program history in the 100 butterfly during the preliminary round. Besides Smith's record-setting performance, Luke Nichols (third, 49.29 seconds), Braxton McGrath (fifth, 49.36 seconds), Max White (tied for ninth, 50.22 seconds) and Charles Sieglaff (tied for ninth, 50.22 seconds) all etched their names into the SDSU top 10. Nichols and McGrath placed 11th and 12th, respectively, in the evening finals, with White finishing 15th and Sieglaff claiming 17th.
Carstensen turned in the top individual finish by a Jackrabbit thus far in the championships by earning a silver medal in the 100 backstroke. A freshman from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Carstensen touched the wall in 48.82 seconds, one-tenth of a second behind champion Sean Simmons of Denver.
Marcus Benson also swam in the 100 backstroke A final, placing sixth in 49.98 seconds, while Denilson Cyprianos (ninth in 49.24 seconds) and Rafael Negri (11th in 50.36 seconds) swam in the B final.
Carstensen, Smith and Nichols teamed with Eric Anderson in the final event of the evening for a record-shattering performance in the 400 medley relay. The quartet combined for a fourth-place time of 3 minutes, 16.05 seconds, bettering the previous school record by more than three seconds (3:19.18) set by Chase Petersen, Wyatt Rumrill, Cody Watkins and Trever Brenner in 2019.
The SDSU men have now set school records in eight events during the Summit League Championships, including all four relays contested thus far.
Earlier in the evening session, Anderson posted a fifth-place individual finish in the 200 freestyle with the second-fastest time in program history at 1:38.86. Sam Johnson (12th, 1:40.25), Jon Galles (14th, 1:40.62) and Alex Kraft (15th, 1:41.17) all competed in the 200 freestyle B final.
Freshman Matthew Heaphy also vaulted into second place on the SDSU performance list in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 55.73 seconds that was good for 13th place.
Other point-producing performances for the Jackrabbit men on Friday were recorded by Jack Ellison (11th, 4:03.98) and Damon Venner (16th, 4:13.24) in the 400 individual medley.
SDSU remained in fourth place in the team standings with 299 points. Defending champion Denver holds a narrow lead over Lindenwood, 553-527.5, with the University of South Dakota in third place with 356 points.
