MINNEAPOLIS — Sianne Downes and Elisabeth Timmer each broke their own school records Saturday as South Dakota State wrapped up the 2023 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships with a fifth-place showing in the women's team standings at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
Downes, a junior from Edenvale, South Africa, turned in her second school-record performance of the weekend in the 200-yard backstroke on Saturday. She surpassed her own mark in the event by .08 seconds with a time of 2 minute, 1.10 seconds, which was good for sixth place. Teammate Kelsey Kocon came in eighth in 2:04.07.
Downes also broke the program's 100 backstroke in competition on Friday (54.98 seconds).
Timmer re-wrote the Jackrabbit record book in the 100 freestyle with a runner-up time of 50.30 seconds that trimmed .15 seconds off the mark she established last season.
Freshman Marissa Branham competed in a pair of A finals during Saturday's evening session, placing seventh in the 100 individual medley, 58.72 seconds, and eighth in the 200 breaststroke, 2:19.33.
The Jackrabbits also received a pair of top-10 finishes in the 1,650 freestyle as Natalie Cannell placed ninth, 17:33.66, and Emily Shuttleworth claimed 10th in 17:39.26.
SDSU finished fifth in the team standings out of eight women's squads with 317 points. Denver repeated as Summit League champion with 1,047 points, followed by South Dakota with 695.5 points.
