LEON, Mexico - South Dakota State head basketball coach
Aaron Johnston along with the USA Basketball FIBA Women's AmeriCup team secured a silver medal at the 2023 FIBA Women's AmeriCup Sunday. The U.S. fell to Brazil, 69-58, in Sunday's championship game.
The silver is Johnston's second medal with USA Basketball. He was also an assistant for the U19 squad that won a World Cup gold medal in 2021.
The United States played its sixth overall gold medal game. The USA moved to 4-2 all-time in gold medal games and won a second AmeriCup silver medal (1997). The USA and Brazil faced off for the third time in a championship game, previously splitting the title games in 1993 (USA) and 1997 (Brazil).
The United States and Brazil played for the ninth time in FIBA Americas competition and for the second this week. Brazil has an all-time series edge of 6-3 and also won the July 4 Group A matchup 67-54.
Since the event's inception in 1989, the United States has captured four Women's AmeriCup gold medals, including titles in 2019 and 2021, and two silver.
