LARAMIE, Wyo. - The South Dakota State volleyball team opened the season with a split Friday as the Jacks fell to Green Bay 3-0 and beat Winthrop 3-1 at the Rumble in the Rockies tournament hosted by Wyoming.
The Jackrabbits hit .177 in their first match of the day, then rebounded to hit .402 in the nightcap.
Katie Van Egdom averaged 4.0 kills per set at a .407 clip in her sophomore opener. Fellow outside hitter
Sylvie Zgonc put down 3.14 kills on average during her first day in a Jackrabbit uniform.
Raegen Reilly and
Rylee Martin dished 6.43 and 4.14 assists per set, respectively.
South Dakota State vs. Green Bay - L, 0-3 (19-25, 26-28, 17-25)
The Jackrabbits struggled to find an offensive rhythm in their opening match, hitting just .177 as a team with 39 kills and 19 errors on 113 swings in the sweep. Van Egdom recorded 11 kills at a .346 swing rate and freshman Zgonc had seven kills in her debut. Reilly dished 14 assists while Martin had 11 helpers. The duo had one service ace each.
Zgonc paced the defense with 14 digs, followed by classmate Stella Winters' 11 digs. Martin and Van Egdom contributed six apiece.
Annalee Ventling-Brown and
Elyse Winter tallied four and three blocks, respectively.
Set 1: Consecutive Green Bay aces made it 10-6 for the Phoenix, then another made it 13-8. A 6-2 stretch pushed GB's lead to 22-15. Zgonc put down a kill and Reilly tallied an ace to help the Jacks come back within four (23-19) before Green Bay took set one 25-19.
Set 2: Kills by
Brogan Beck and
Sydni Schetnan put the Jacks up 12-11, then a pair of kills by Van Egdom and an ace from Martin made it 15-13. SDSU had set point at 24-22 but allowed Green Bay to come back and regain a 25-24 advantage. Tied at 26, Green Bay finished off the set with a kill and an SDSU error.
Set 3: Green Bay opened the third game with an 8-0 run and never looked back. The Jacks worked to come back with a few solid stretches but ultimately fell 25-17.
South Dakota State vs. Winthrop - W, 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-8, 25-19)
Van Egdom set a new career best with 17 kills and a .464 hitting percentage to lead SDSU to its first victory of the year. Zgonc added 15 and Schetnan was also in double figures with 10 kills. SDSU hit .402 as a team and also got high-percentage performances from Ventling-Brown (.417) and Winter (.667).
Reilly gave out 27 assists, followed by Martin with 15 and Winterfeld with seven. Winterfeld led the way with 15 digs while
Faith Saewert had 10 and Van Egdom chipped in seven. Also on the defensive end, Beck took part in 10 blocks, which matches the program record for total blocks in a four-set match. Schetnan was in on eight rejections.
Set 1: Winthrop led 8-5 before a Ventling-Brown notched a kill and an ace to help the Jacks tie it up at eight. A 6-1 run led by two Van Egdom kills pushed SDSU up 17-14. The Jackrabbits ended the set with four straight points to win 25-18.
Set 2: Winthrop opened up a 10-6 lead in set two. Kills from Schetnan and Van Egdom plus a Winthrop attack error tied the set at 12-all, but a 7-1 Winthrop run made it 19-13 for the Eagles. Winthrop won the set 25-22.
Set 3: With the Jackrabbits already up 8-6, SDSU extended its lead to 16-6 with an 8-0 run powered by three kills from Zgonc. The Jacks finished the game on a 9-1 stretch that featured kills from Zgonc, Van Egdom, Schetnan and Ventling-Brown.
Set 4: A seven-point run sparked by a Winter kill gave the Jacks a 15-8 lead in the final set. Van Egdom added two kills and teamed up with Ventling-Brown on the block for a three-point stretch that made it 20-10 for SDSU. Winthrop pulled back to within four at 22-18 but State held off the Eagles for a 25-19 win.Â
