MINNEAPOLIS — South Dakota State withstood a late charge from Summit League rival St. Thomas to come away with a 151-147 dual victory and a split of a season-opening triangular Friday afternoon at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. Host and 18th-ranked Minnesota earned a sweep of the competition by defeating the Jackrabbits, 251-49, and adding a 251-47 victory over St. Thomas.
Senior Sam Johnson tallied two third-place individual finishes to lead SDSU. The Sioux Falls native clocked respective third-place times of 1 minute, 42.82 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle and 46.46 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle. Johnson also anchored the Jackrabbits' fourth-place 200 medley relay, teaming with Aiden Carstensen, Nik Keuser and Austin Smith for a time of 1:33.26.
Keuser, a freshman from Omaha, placed third individually in the 100 breaststroke, :57.30, while sophomore Cody Vertin was third in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:06.92. Vertin also was the Jackrabbits' top finisher in the 400 individual medley by placing fifth in 4:08.24, and was followed by teammates Jack Ellison (sixth, 4:12.46) and Kolden Kringen (seventh, 4:13.98).
Denilson Cyprianos and Austin Smith added team-best times in two events each. Cyprianos was the top Jackrabbit in the backstroke events, placing fourth in the 200-yard race (1:52.53) and fifth in the 100 (:51.37).
Smith, meanwhile, placed SDSU in both the 100 butterfly (sixth, :51.15) and 100 individual medley (:53.59).
Bryan Wong also began the season on a strong note with a fourth-place time of 1:56.61 in the 200 butterfly.
Minnesota claimed the top two spots in all 16 events contested in the triangular.

The Jackrabbits' home opener scheduled for Saturday has been postponed. SDSU is now scheduled to return to competition Nov. 1-2 at the Husky Extravaganza in Rochester, Minnesota.
