VERMILLION, S.D. —Carson Noecker placed second to lead South Dakota State to its ninth-consecutive Summit League Cross Country Championship Saturday afternoon.
"It was a great day for the Jackrabbits. We are certainly proud to be part of this program and to have the men and women win on the same day. That's not an easy thing to do. I think the men really responded well to a very strong North Dakota State team that definitely challenged us and got our attention. I am certainly proud of them and the way they executed today. We're lucky we have the chance to go on and compete again at the regional meet and prove ourselves in a bit of a bigger pond."
THE RACE
Noecker battled with Oral Roberts' Abraham Chelangam throughout the race as the pair fought for the advantage. In the final 2K, Chelangam managed to find an edge over Noecker, however, both student-athletes finished the race under the conference meet record. Noecker took silver with a time of 23:51.47, obliterating SDSU's Bluffs Golf Course record, previously set by Chase Cayo in 2017 with a time of 24:44.8.
Cody Larson crossed the line 25 seconds behind Noecker to take bronze with a new personal record of 24:15.93. Larson's performance was phenomenal as he finished nearly 15 seconds ahead of the fourth-place runner and over a minute faster than his performance at the conference meet last season.
Josh Becker rounded out the top five with a time of 24:35.56. Freshman Eli Hall continues to impress as he crossed the line behind Becker in sixth, clocking a time of 24:39.42 for a new personal record. Ben Anteau rounded out the Jackrabbit scoring five in ninth place, crossing the line with a time of 24:50.46.
Jackson Dutcher clinched a spot on the All-Summit League Second Team with a 13th-place finish, clocking a time of 25:02.39. Cormick Logue finished a few seconds later in 15th with a time of 25:05.27. Brandon Kampsen finished at 25:07.60 in his first conference meet to take 18th. Dale Johnson and Will Lohr rounded out the Jackrabbit squad in 24th and 25th, respectively. Johnson clocked a time of 25:25.76, while Lohr finished four seconds later at 25:29.33.
THE AWARDS
The Jackrabbits dominated the All-Summit League First Team podium, occupying four of the seven spots. Noecker and Becker claimed their second-straight First Team honors and were the only two athletes to do so.
After missing Second Team by four spots last year, Larson stunned with a third-place finish to take his first All-Summit League honors. Hall joined Noecker, Larson, and Becker on the First Team podium in his first conference meet. The stand-out freshman was also the first newcomer across the line, earning him the Summit League's Newcomer of the Year award, on top of his First Team honors.
Anteau, in his first conference race, clinched a spot on the All-Summit League Second Team. Dutcher joined Anteau on Second Team after coming up six spots short last season.
