SIOUX FALLS — Denilson Cyprianos won a pair of event titles to lead the South Dakota State men's swimming and diving team Saturday on the final day of the Coyote Invite. The two-day unscored meet at Midco Aquatic Center marked the end of regular season competition for the Jackrabbits.
A junior from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Cyprianos opened the day with a victory in the 400-yard individual medley during the morning session, clocking in at 4 minutes, 8.92 seconds to win the event by nearly seven seconds. Later in the afternoon, Cyprianos claimed the 200 butterfly in 1:54.78, with teammate Jack Ellison taking third in 1:57.42.
Freshman Cody Vertin notched a pair of runner-up finishes Saturday. The Brookings native placed second in the 200 freestyle during morning competition, 1:43.57, and added a second-place showing in the 100 individual medley, 52.53 seconds.
Vertin's performance in the 200 freestyle led a group of four Jackrabbits to place in the top six of the event. Braxton McGrath was third in 1:44.30, while fellow freshman Kolden Kringen place fourth (1:44.50) and Bryan Wong took sixth (1:45.55). McGrath added another third-place effort in the 200 backstroke, 1:54.05, with Braeden Glor fourth in 1:56.69.
Sophomore Aiden Carstensen posted three top-four individual performances on Saturday, opening the day with a fourth-place time of 51.40 seconds in the 100 butterfly. His best finish of the day came in the 100 backstroke (:50.69) with another fourth-place time posted in the 100 freestyle (:46.86).
Carstensen and McGrath made up half of the Jackrabbits' runner-up 400 freestyle relay, teaming with Jon Galles and Vaughn Raimo for a time of 3:07.25.
Also posting an individual runner-up finish in the pool was freshman Will Stanton, who clocked a time of 17:04.66 in the 1,650 freestyle.
Divers Oscar Francis and Reece Reid each were runners-up in a diving event. Francis was second in the 1-meter competition with a score of 169.30, while Reid claimed the No. 2 spot on the 3-meter board with 197.05 points.
Austin Smith contributed a third-place effort in the 100 backstroke, 51.30 seconds, and also took fourth in the 200 breaststroke, 2:10.36.
