SENIORS LEAD JACKS TO WIN IN ECAC FIRST ROUND

RANCHO MURIETA, Calif. — South Dakota State recorded sweeps in both jumping seat events to highlight a 14-2 victory over Minnesota Crookston in the opening round of the ECAC Dual Discipline Equestrian Championship Monday at the Murieta Equestrian Center.

The Jackrabbits improved to 4-7 overall and earned the right to take on top-seeded UT Martin in semifinal action on Tuesday. Host and second-seeded UC Davis will take on No. 3 seed Delaware State in the other semifinal.

The Jackrabbit quartet of Cali Karbler, Sophia Kregoski, Hannah Steele and Julia Werkhoven provided the sweep in the jumping seat events as two-time winners. Karbler, a senior from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, led the way by registering top scores in both fences and flat with respective totals of 77.5 and 80.5 to win her head-to-head matchups.

Werkhoven continued her strong senior season with a 68.6-62.5 victory in flat against Alexanadra Pfaffenbach, then posted a seven-point victory, 75.5-68.5, versus Juliana Gullo in fences.

Kregoski, meanwhile, turned in winning scores of 74 in fences and 65.5 in flat as she squared off against the Golden Eagles' Gabriela Siefkes in both events. Steele finished off the sweeps with respective winning scores of 73 in flat and 59 in fences.

In the Western events, Shelby Cochran was a two-time winner for the Jackrabbits. A senior from Oxford, Iowa, Cochran posted high scores of 71.25 in both horsemanship and reining. Grace Gerbus (62) and Annika Hanson (68.5) also picked up points in horsemanship for SDSU.

Sophomores Adisyn Kuxhaus (70.25) and Paige Butterfield (69.5) completed the SDSU victory by winning their head-to-head matchups in reining.
