TULSA, Okla. — Top-seeded Cade DeVos and Tanner Sloan advanced to the finals and were among five South Dakota State wrestlers to secure berths in the national tournament during competition Saturday at the Big 12 Wrestling Championship held at the BOK Center.
With nine wrestlers moving on to the second day of competition, the Jackrabbits overtook Northern Iowa for fourth place in the team standings during Saturday's evening session. Iowa State leads the team race with 129.5 points, followed by Oklahoma State with 119.5 points and defending champion Missouri with 96. SDSU tallied 92.5 points on the first day of competition, with Northern Iowa in fifth place with 85 points.
A senior from Altoona, Iowa, DeVos wrestled only twice on Saturday. After receiving a first-round bye, he posted a 4-1 decision over eighth-seeded Brody Conley in the afternoon session. DeVos came back in the night session to knock off fourth-seeded Peyton Mocco, 2-0, to set up a matchup against seventh-seeded Gaven Sax of North Dakota State in Sunday night's finals.
In the 197-pound weight class, Sloan cruised to his fourth appearance in the finals with three bonus-point victories. He recorded falls in each of his two matches during the first session of the day, followed by a 15-0 technical-fall victory over fifth-seeded Wyatt Voelker of Northern Iowa.
That sets up a rematch of last year's championship bout between Sloan and Missouri's Rocky Elam. After Elam downed Sloan via tiebreaker in the 2023 Big 12 final, Sloan has won the last two matchups, including in the semifinals of the NCAA Championships last year.
Also punching their tickets to Kansas City in two weeks were semifinalists Derrick Cardinal (133 pounds) and Cael Swensen (157 pounds), along with 125-pounder Tanner Jordan.
Cardinal won two 133-pound matches during the first session to earn the right to face top-seeded Daton Fix of Oklahoma State in the semifinal round. Fix scored on an early takedown , but the fourth-seeded Cardinal hung tough before falling in a 4-0 decision that sent him to Sunday's consolation semifinals.
Swensen went down to the wire in his semifinal match versus second-seeded Ryder Downey of Northern Iowa. Downey scored what would be the lone point of the match on a second-period escape and fended off a Swensen takedown attempt at the final horn to post a 1-0 victory.
Jordan, meanwhile, worked his way through the wrestlebacks Saturday night to earn a spot in the consolation semifinals and secure his second consecutive nationals berth in the 125-pound weight class. Jordan shook off a quarterfinal loss to fifth-seeded Jore Volk of Wyoming by defeating Yusief Lillie of Utah Valley, 4-0, and Elijah Griffin of California Baptist in a 14-6 major decision.
Clay Carlson and Bennett Berge also notched a pair of wins in the wrestlebacks Saturday night to position themselves one more victory away from securing bids to the NCAA Championships. Carlson put together a big third period against Northern Colorado's Rudy Lopez for a 10-6 decision to open the night session, then posted an 8-4 decision over Cole Brooks of Wyoming to move on to Day 2.
Berge rebounded from a quarterfinal loss to Air Force's Sam Wolf by registering major decisions over North Dakota State's Adam Cherne (17-4) and West Virginia's Dennis Robin (16-5) in the 184-pound weight class.
Splitting matches Saturday night to secure spots in Sunday's seveth-place matches were 149-pouner Alek Martin and heavyweight Luke Rasmussen. Martin opened the session with an 11-2 major decision over Joe Fernau of Air Force before having his second match of the day decided by tiebreakers later in the evening against Missouri's Logan Gioffre. After winning a 2-1 tiebreaker against Dayne Morton of California Baptist to open the day, this time Martin fell by the same score after Gioffre escaped in the first of two 30-second invervals.
Rasmussen, meanwhile, rallied for the second time Saturday as he faced Xavier Doolin of Norhtern Colorado to kick off his action in the night session. Much like their meeting in dual action earlier this season, Doolin jumped out to a big early lead, recording a takedown and four-point near-fall for a 7-1 advantage. Rasmussen recovered in the second period to take a 9-7 advantage with a takedown, two-point near-fall and a three-point near-fall before pinning Doolin late in the third period.
In his second match of the night, Rasmussen dropped a 2-0 decision to fifth-seeded Konner Doucet of Oklahoma State.
UP NEXT
Consolation semifinals and placing matches (seventh, fifth and third place) begin at noon Sunday. The championship bouts are set for 7:30 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN2.
