South Dakota State continues its road stand on Saturday when the Jackrabbits take on Omaha in Baxter Arena. The Jacks and Mavericks are set to square off at 1 p.m.
The Jackrabbits are 1-1 in Summit League play. SDSU opened its conference schedule with a 91-70 victory at home over Denver on Jan. 2. The Jacks traveled to St. Paul to take on St. Thomas this past Wednesday. In a game that featured 17 lead changes and nine tie scores, the Tommies narrowly outlasted SDSU in a 73-72 thriller.Â
Omaha enters Saturday's contest sitting atop the Summit League standings at 3-0 alongside St. Thomas. Victories over North Dakota (95-85), NDSU (85-80) and Kansas City (77-58) have given the Mavs their best three-game start to conference play since 2019-20. The Mavericks feature three double-digit scorers in Marquel Sutton (16.3), Tony Osburn (11.8) and Lance Waddles (10.3). Sutton is also the team's leader in rebounding with 7.5 per contest.
SDSU and Omaha went to overtime in their last meeting which took place in Baxter Arena on Feb. 17 last season. The Mavs held a 73-67 lead with 49 seconds left in regulation but a
Matt Mims 3-pointer, followed by a forced turnover and
Zeke Mayo three-point play, pushed the game to overtime.
Charlie Easley scored a career-high 24 points and Mayo added 22 to carry South Dakota State to an 85-77 win.Â
Last year's meeting in Brookings was also tightly contested. The Jacks won 90-87 on Jan. 18 in Frost Arena with SDSU holding off the Mavs after the visitors cut into a 14-point deficit. SDSU has won the last 10 meetings between the two sides and 15 of the last 17 matchups. Â
