DENVER — Lilly Lund scored a 21st minute goal off a Denver corner kick opportunity and it served as the eventual game-winner as the Pioneers defeated South Dakota State, 1-0, at University of Denver Soccer Stadium on Thursday.Â
Â
SDSU recorded the first two shots on the night before Denver found its footing. The Pioneers, coming off a 1-0 home to loss Oral Roberts, produced two shots of their own before finding the back of the net.Â
Â
Denver jumped in front after a Lund shot was saved by Jackrabbit keeper
Mallorie Benhart. The stop led to the Pioneer corner kick. The cross into the box on the opportunity was initially punched away by Benhart. A Denver player headed the airborne ball back into the box and it fell at the feet of Lund. She booted a shot past a diving Benhart to give the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits pursued an equalizer for the remainder of the match. They eventually went into halftime with a 10-5 edge in shots.Â
Â
The second half saw SDSU provide a majority of the attacking pressure. The Jackrabbits put together another nine shots in the final 45 minutes and forced Denver keeper Alina Santos to make five saves.Â
Â
SDSU's Adrianna Agbayani had a shot blocked in the 87th minute. The Jacks had two corner kicks in the final two minutes but were unable to register another shot attempt.Â
Â
South Dakota State dropped to 2-1-1 in Summit League play and 8-2-4 overall. Denver improved to 4-1-0 as well as 7-3-3 overall.Â
