SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The South Dakota State women's basketball team knocked down 12 3-pointers on its way to a 72-63 win over Gonzaga Thursday night at the Sanford Pentagon. The Jackrabbits remain unbeaten on the year at 5-0.
Six different Jackrabbits connected on at least one trey, highlighted by a 4-for-7 effort from
Madison Mathiowetz. The senior finished the night with a season-high 17 points to lead the Jacks.
Katie Vasecka and
Hadley Thul joined Mathiowetz in double figures with two 3-pointers each and 16 and 10 points, respectively. Vasecka also notched a pair of steals. Thul, a freshman, tallied three rebounds, two assists and a steal off the bench.
The Jackrabbits created their separation from the Bulldogs with a hot-shooting second quarter. SDSU was 62 percent from the floor in the second and outscored Gonzaga 27-14. Vasecka scored the first five points of the period and an 8-0 run in the middle put SDSU up 35-22. Gonzaga scored the next seven to cut the deficit to six, but the Jackrabbits scored nine of the final 11 points to lead 44-31 at halftime.
Maggie Hartwig drained a triple at the buzzer.
Gonzaga outscored SDSU by four in the second half, but timely 3-pointers by the Jackrabbits held off the Bulldogs. Five of SDSU's nine field goals in the second half were from beyond the arc.
Brooklyn Meyer was held to nine points in the contest but grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, plus had two assists and two steals. Hartwig chipped in eight points, with two 3-pointers, and five rebounds.
Emilee Fox matched her career high with six assists.
SDSU shot 45 percent for the game and 48 percent from the 3-point line. Gonzaga was 42 percent from the field but just 21 percent from long range.
Gonzaga out-rebounded the Jackrabbits 43-23 and had a 15-3 advantage on the offensive glass.
Gonzaga got 19 points from Allie Turner and 15 from Lauren Whittaker. Whittaker grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

SDSU leads the all-time series 4-1.
