PUERTO AVENTURAS, Mexico - The South Dakota State women's basketball team fell 83-48 to No. 12 North Carolina Thursday afternoon in the teams' first contest of the Cancun Challenge.
The Jackrabbits dropped their first contest of the year and move to 5-1 overall. The Tar Heels are 6-1.
SDSU turned the ball over 21 times and gave up 12 offensive rebounds, which resulted in 48 points for UNC. The Jackrabbits were held to 33 percent from the floor and hit just two 3-pointers.
The Tar Heels started the game with a 9-0 lead. A pair of free throws from
Mahli Abdouch cut the deficit to four at 13-9, but UNC quickly went back up by double digits and continued to pull away.
Brooklyn Meyer paced the Jackrabbits with 16 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Mahli Abdouch and
Ellie Colbeck put up nine points apiece with Colbeck shooting 3-for-4.
Madison Mathiowetz led the Jackrabbit rebounders with five boards.
UNC had four players reach double figures, led by Elina Aarnisalo and Nyla Brooks with 14 points each. Indya Nivar tallied 10 steals, five assists and two blocks.

UNC now leads the all-time series 1-0 .
