PUERTO AVENTURAS, Mexico - South Dakota State senior
Brooklyn Meyer scored 28 points Friday afternoon, but the South Dakota State women's basketball team fell 80-67 to Columbia at the Cancun Challenge.
Neither side led by more than five until the Lions made a push to pull away over the final two minutes. The Jacks dropped their second straight and move to 5-2 overall. Columbia is now 4-3 on the year.
Meyer scored 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting after halftime, which helped the Jackrabbits lead by as many as five during the third quarter. Down 33-32 after 20 minutes, the Jackrabbits used a 7-1 stretch to take their largest lead of the game at 49-44 with 3:17 remaining in the third quarter. The Lions scored 10 of the next 15 points to go back up by one, 54-53, with one quarter left to play.
The game was tight almost the rest of the way, and SDSU was within three at the 1:57 mark, but the Jacks did not score again and turned the ball over twice over the final stretch.
Madison Mathiowetz added a season-high 19 points on a 6-of-10 shooting night. The senior was 2-for-3 from the 3-point line and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.Â
Ellie Colbeck was next with eight points.
Maggie Hartwig was the Jackrabbits' top rebounder, grabbing 10 boards to go with five points. Meyer added six rebounds and had two blocks.
Emilee Fox gave out three assists and
Mahli Abdouch tallied three steals.
SDSU finished the game 42 percent from the field but knocked down only 3-of-10 3-point tries. The Jackrabbits out-rebounded the Lions 36-34 and had a 10-5 advantage in assists.
Columbia's Riley Weiss led all players with 31 points. The Lions shot 47 percent and knocked down eight 3-pointers.

- Brooklyn Meyer's two blocks moves her into a tie for fifth place on SDSU's career blocks chart. She is tied with Kallie Theisen with 128 career blocks.
- Brooklyn Meyer's 28 points is her second highest scoring output of the season and sixth highest of her career.
