South Dakota State makes the transition to the back half of Summit League play this week as the Jackrabbits take on Omaha for the second time this year on Wednesday night, then faces off with South Dakota in the first meeting of the season on Saturday afternoon.
The Jackrabbits enter the week with a 16-5 overall record and 6-1 record in league play. SDSU went 2-0 last week with wins at North Dakota (99-47) and Kansas City (76-63).
Omaha is 2-20 on the season with its only wins coming over the NAIA's College of Saint Mary (Neb.) and Briar Cliff. The Mavericks' offense is led by Sarai Estupinan's 12.9 points and 3.6 assists per contest. Avril Smith ranks seventh in the nation in rebounds per game (11.2) and 13th in blocks per game (2.36).
South Dakota enters the week with a 15-6 overall record and is third in the Summit League with a 5-2 conference mark. The Coyotes get 14.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game from Denver transfer Angelina Robles. Molly Joyce, a transfer from Truman State, chips in 11.7 points per contest. USD's defense is holding its opponents to just .330 shooting this year, which is third in the country.
KEY STORYLINES
- South Dakota State (16-5, 6-1 Summit) takes on Omaha (2-20, 0-7) at First Bank & Trust Arena. This is SDSU's lone home game in a three-week stretch.
- Brooklyn Meyer is the reigning Summit League Peak Performer of the Week for the fifth time this season. The senior averaged a double-double over two wins last week (28.0 PPG, 10.0 RPG).
- South Dakota State is shooting .491 in Summit League games and nearly every Jackrabbit player is shooting better than 40% in conference action.
- Led by Brooklyn Meyer's 21.4 points per game, SDSU has six players averaging at least 6.5 points per contest. Meyer is also the Jacks' passing leader with 2.8 APG and is one of five players averaging at least 2.0 assists per game.
- Brooklyn Meyer ranks 13th in the nation in scoring (21.5 PPG) and sixth in field goal percentage (.622). She is one of three players in the country averaging 20+ points and shooting better than 60% this year.
- Maddie Mathiowetz is SDSU's second leading scorer with 12.2 points per game and has scored at least 15 points in four straight games.
- Emilee Fox adds 9.0 points per game overall and 11.8 points, on average, in Summit League games. The sophomore averages 2.3 3-pointers per game at a .593 clip. 96 of her 126 points this season are from beyond the arc.
- SDSU scores 81.1 points per Summit game and allows just 55.9 points, both of which lead the conference. Omaha scores 49.6 points per Summit game and allows 75.4. Those marks are last in the Summit League.
