Travis Brewster Joins the Jackrabbit women’s basketball coaching staff for the 2007-08 season, filling a newly created position as South Dakota State University completes its transition to full Division I status and joins the Summit League.
Brewster spent the past season as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where his primary responsibilities were recruiting, working with the team’s post players and coordinating game-day preparations. Under his guidance, the Panthers’ Traci Edwards led the Horizon League in scoring at 20.5 points per game and also topped the league in rebounding for the second consecutive year.
Brewster will maintain many of the same duties at SDSU.
“Travis’ brings a great knowledge and ability to coach the post position, and that has already paid dividends in the development of our post players,” SDSU head coach Aaron Johnston said. “He brings a tremendous amount of coaching and recruiting experience from his previous positions. Our staff puts the student-athlete experience first in every way and it is clear that Travis takes the same approach.”
Previously, Brewster spent four seasons as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at perennial NCAA?Division II national title contender University of North Dakota. UND made postseason appearances in each of his four seasons there, including a North Central Regional runner-up finish to SDSU during the 2003-04 season. In his four seasons in Grand Forks, UND compiled a 112-19 record, won back-to-back North Central Conference titles his final two seasons and posted two North Central Regional runner-up finishes. During his tenure at UND he also helped coach 14 all-NCC?players, five All-Americans and three Academic All-America honorees.
A native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Brewster began his collegiate playing career at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, Iowa, where he was an honorable mention all-region performer. He moved on to Division I Charleston Southern University (S.C.), where he was served as a team captain and was honored as team defensive MVP.
Brewster graduated from Charleston Southern with a degree in speech and drama in 1994, then played professionally for three seasons in Switzerland and Northern Ireland. For his career, Brewster averaged a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, earning Swiss All-Star honors two times.
Upon returning to the United States, Brewster returned to Iowa Lakes to begin his coaching career. He spent three years on the bench at Iowa Lakes before moving to North Dakota as a graduate assistant for the UND?men’s basketball team.
He and his wife, Becky, are the parents of three children: Drake (9), Reganne (7) and Kaid (4.)
