Kristina Martin reached the 1,000-kill mark for her career and South Dakota State head coach Andrew Palileo recorded his 200th career victory as the Jackrabbit volleyball team won a pair of matches Saturday at the Jackrabbit Invitational.
SDSU, 9-4 overall, opened the day with a four-game victory over UMKC, before closing out the tournament with a three-game sweep of Lamar (Texas).
SDSU 3, UMKC 1 Three Jackrabbit players reached double figures for kills as South Dakota State ended a two-match losing streak with a 30-26, 27-30, 30-22, 30-18 victory over future Mid-Continent Conference opponent UMKC.
The win also marked the 200th collegiate victory for Andrew Palileo, who now has a 201-120 career record in 10 seasons. At SDSU, Palileo has recorded a 116-67 record in six seasons.
Martin led the SDSU offensive attack with 16 kills and a .419 hitting percentage (16 kills, 3 errors in 31 attacks), while Amy Anderson added 14 kills. Mackenzie Angner contributed 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage (10-1-18) as the Jackrabbits out-hit the Kangaroos .309 to .140 for the match.
Kristie Klusaw tallied 42 set assists, with Diedra Artz contributing another 10.
Defensively, SDSU tallied 15.5 team blocks, led by Anderson's seven. Samantha Pearson notched a team-high 11 digs.
UMKC received 16 kills from Sarah Johnson, with Jacqui Wood adding 14. Caitlin Koenig was credited with 48 set assists and Kristen Berthiaume led the Kangaroo defense with a match-high 15 digs.
SDSU 3, Lamar 0 Martin reached the 1,000-kill mark in Game 3 en route to a match-high 17 kills as SDSU won 30-24, 30-25, 30-20. A junior from Hubertus, Wis., Martin became the 11th player in Jackrabbit history to reach the mileston.
Laura Slagter added 12 kills and a .550 hitting percentage (12 kills, 1 error in 20 attempts), while Anderson, who joined Martin on the all-tournament team, contributed 11 kills and three blocks.
Klusaw tallied 46 set assists as the Jackrabbits out-hit Lamar .282 to .076 for the match.
On defense, Pearson led SDSU with 13 kills, with freshman Stacey Wernert adding 10.
Lamar was led by Courtney Mitchell's eight kills. Adrianne Meengs posted 16 set assists and Alex Brink added 10 digs for the Cardinals, who dropped to 3-10 overall after falling in all four matches at the Jackrabbit Invitational.
SDSU returns to home action Tuesday, hosting Creighton (Neb.). First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Frost Arena.
