SIGHTS ON THE SUMMIT: South Dakota State begins another new era this season as it begins play in the 10-team Summit League (formerly the Mid-Continent Conference). Teams began playing a double round-robin schedule in early December.
The Jackrabbits were picked to finish third in the league based on a poll involving the league's coaches, sports information directors and select media despite receiving the most first-place votes. Defending conference tournament champion Oral Roberts (Okla.) was tabbed the league favorite, followed by 2006-07 regular season champion Oakland (Mich.).
Individually, junior forward
Jennifer Warkenthien was named to the Summit League Preseason All-Conference Second Team.
IN TRANSITION: The 2007-08 season marks the final year of a four-year transition process toward reclassification of the Jackrabbit athletics program from NCAA Division II to full Division I status. By meeting annual criteria outlined by the NCAA, SDSU will be eligible for NCAA postseason competition during the 2008-09 season.
FIRST MEETING: South Dakota State dug itself a huge hole in the first half against Western Illinois, gained a momentary lead in the second half, but could not come up with enough plays down the stretch in a 67-60 loss Jan. 14 in Macomb, Ill..
Cold shooting plagued the Jackrabbits most of the night, but especially in the first half as they made only two of their first 19 shots from the field. That allowed Western Illinois to take its biggest lead of the game, 24-7, at the 10:12 mark.
SDSU was able to get into an offensive rhythm later on in the first half, putting together a 14-5 run to pull to within eight, 29-21, on a
Kristin Rotert three-pointer with 3:28 to play in the first half. However, the Westerwinds ended the half with a 7-2 spurt, capped by a banked-in three-pointer from half court by Amanda Walker at the first-half buzzer, giving WIU at 36-23 lead.
The Jackrabbits quickly grabbed the momentum early in the second half, trimming the deficit to single digits in the first two minutes. SDSU scored seven straight points to tie the game at 46-all on a Rotert three-pointer with 10:44 remaining. The game would be tied three other times before
Maria Boever gave the Jackrabbits their lone lead of the night, 55-54, with a traditional three-point play at the 4:33 mark.
Western Illinois regained the lead for good on its next possession as Stephanie Lovingood scored on a layup. Katy Davenport added four of her career-high 23 points to help the Westerwinds go on a 9-0 run. SDSU would get no closer than five points the rest of the way.
Gina Hugelier and Jordon O'Brien each contributed 10 points. Hugelier also tallied seven rebounds and six assists.
The Westerwinds, who shot 58 percent in the first half, ended the night 24-of-49 from the field, 49 percent. WIU shot an efficient 5-of-7 from three-point range and made 14-of-21 free throw attempts.
SDSU, meanwhile, finished the game 20-of-57 from the field, 35 percent, and was 4-of-26 from three-point range. The Jackrabbits fared better at the free throw line, making 16-of-22 attempts, 72.7 percent.
Boever posted her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds . Rotert added 11 points off the bench and
Jennifer Warkenthien tallied 10 points.
The Jackrabbits held a 37-31 rebounding advantage and committed only 14 turnovers, compared to 17 by WIU.
ANOTHER WINNING SEASON: With its victory at Oakland (Mich.) on Feb. 2, South Dakota State all but sealed its 22nd consecutive winning season. Eleven times over that span the Jackrabbits have won 20 games in a season.
SDSU's last losing season was an 11-16 campaign during the 1985-86 season.
700 WINS: The Jackrabbits' victory over Missouri on Nov. 18 was the 700th in the women's basketball program's history. Since the modern era of women's basketball at South Dakota State University began with a 6-0 mark during the 1966-67 season, the Jackrabbits have gone on to compile an overall record of 712-329 (.684 winning percentage).
THINK PINK: South Dakota State, in conjunction with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and The Summit League, will participate in the Think Pink promotion when the Jackrabbits host IUPUI on Feb. 11.
In its second year, Think Pink is an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. Additionally, the NCAA is implementing the “Calling for a Cure” campaign, where all NCAA women's basketball officials will be blowing a pink whistle Feb. 8-17.
BENCH POINTS: While the starting lineup has been in flux much of the season, the Jackrabbits have received consistent scoring off the bench. SDSU reserves have combined to score in double figures in 21 of 22 games ? the lone exception an eight-point combination Jan. 12 at IUPUI.
Jackrabbit reserves have outscored the starters in two games this season, accounting for 49 of the team's 91 points versus Minnesota-Duluth on New Year's Day and scoring 43 of the squad's 76 points in a Jan. 19 home win over Southern Utah.
WARKENTHIEN MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME: Junior forward
Jennifer Warkenthien has taken on a leadership role for the Jackrabbits since returning to the lineup after missing the first seven games due to injury.
After a four-point, five-rebound season debut at Oral Roberts (Okla.) on Dec. 8, Warkenthien has reached double figures for scoring in 11 of the last 14 games, including 22 points against UMKC on Jan. 21. Since rejoining the lineup, Warkenthien has posted team-best averages of 13.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
She tallied a career-best 29 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field and 11-of-16 from the free throw line in an overtime win IPFW on Feb. 4. It marked the third time this season she has tallied 20-plus points in a game.
In her first home action of the season, Dec. 29 versus Northern Iowa, she turned in a 19-point, eight-rebound and four-block performance.
ROTERT FOR THREE: South Dakota State freshman
Kristin Rotert has begun her collegiate career with a strong start from the perimeter as she currently leads The Summit League in a pair of three-point shooting categories. The Salem native leads the league with an average of 2.14 three-pointers made per game while shooting at a 41.2 percent clip from long range, good for third in the league.
In NCAA statistics released Feb. 1, Rotert would rank 32nd among Division I players in three-point percentage if the Jackrabbits had completed their transition to full D-I status.
As a team, SDSU would rank in a tie for 23rd among Division I squads by averaging seven made three-pointers per game.
With a team-best 47 three-pointers, Rotert has set a new freshman record for three-pointers in a season. The previous record of 41 was set by Sherri Brende during the 1997-98 campaign.
Scoring 10.3 points per game this season, Rotert had her string of double-figure games end at seven in the Wisconsin game on Dec. 14, when she was held to 2-of-12 shooting from the field en route to six points. She made a three-point field goal in the first 11 games before having her streak stopped Dec. 29 versus Northern Iowa. Rotert has drained a three-pointer in 18 of the team's 22 games, while starting six times. She has reached double figures 12 times, including a career-best 21 points against Minnesota-Duluth on Jan. 1.
A 6-foot wing player from Salem, Rotert was honored by The Summit League with its player of the week award on Nov. 20 after helping lead the Jackrabbits to victories over Oregon and Missouri. Over the two games, she averaged 17.5 points per game, while shooting 7-of-19 (42 percent) from behind the arc and 8-of-8 at the free throw line.
BOEVER STARTS: Sophomore
Maria Boever drew her first career starting assignments during the season-opening weekend and responded with a pair of double-figure scoring performances.
Against Arkansas State, the Worthington, Minn., native narrowly missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. She followed that with 19 points and nine rebounds before fouling out against UC Riverside.
Boever posted her first career double-double with 15 points and a career-high 12 rebounds Jan. 5 versus IPFW. She has scored in double figures in 17 of 21 games, including each of the last 10.
Boever has started all 22 games this season and currently ranks second on the team in both scoring and rebounding with respective averages of 12.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
She also leads the team in field goal shooting at 53.0 percent (106-of-200). In the last eight games, Boever has made 41-of-70 field goal attempts, 58.6 percent.
VERDEGAN MOVING ON UP: Senior guard
Andrea Verdegan played in her 100th career collegiate game Jan. 5 versus IPFW.
A starter in 81 of 108 career games, Verdegan is moving up the career charts in several categories during her senior season. With four three-pointers against Oakland (Mich.) on Jan. 7, Verdegan upped her career total to 131, breaking a tie with Gwen Greiner (127 from 1998-2001) for 11th place on the career three-point chart, and also passing Shannon Schlagel (129 from 2002-05) for 10th place and Brooke Dickmeyer (130 from 2002-05) for the ninth spot. She enters Satuday's game with 137 career three-pointers, needing six to pass Rachel Halsrud (142 three-pointers from 1992-95) for eighth place.
Verdegan became the 14th player in Jackrabbit history to record 300 career assists, reaching the milestone Jan. 12 at IUPUI with a five-assist effort. Her career total now stands at 321, putting her in 12th place. Verdegan also has moved into 13th place in career steals, entering the week with 173.
WORKING OVERTIME: SDSU's double-overtime victory over UC Riverside on Nov. 11 marked the first overtime game against a Division I opponent for the Jackrabbits since making the move to the D-I ranks.
The Jackrabbits had last played an overtime game in the 2004 North Central Regional championship game against North Dakota, one in which SDSU prevailed, 72-70, on a neutral court in St. Paul, Minn.
SDSU's last double overtime game came during the 1983-84 season, when the Jackrabbits defeated Air Force, 73-65.
The Jacks also won a road overtime game for the first time in eight years when it posted a 64-63 victory at Oakland (Mich.) on Feb. 2. Previously, SDSU's last overtime victory in a true road game came at St. Cloud State (Minn.) during the 1999-2000 season.
SDSU followed that with another OT game at IPFW on Feb. 4, escaping with a 74-72 victory. It marked the first time the Jackrabbits played back-to-back overtime games since the 1986-87 season, when they split games at Alaska-Anchorage (W, 89-84) and at Alaska-Fairbanks (L, 67-68).
Under coach
Aaron Johnston, SDSU holds a 6-2 record in overtime games, winning each of the last five.
TOUGH AT HOME: SDSU's loss to Marquette on Dec. 31, 2006, was a rarity during the
Aaron Johnston era. In his seven seasons as Jackrabbit head coach, Johnston has led the Jackrabbits to a 96-11 record (.897 winning percentage) at Frost Arena, including winning 38 of their last 40 home games.
Since the start of the 2001-02 season, SDSU has an 85-6 home record, losing just one game at Frost Arena each full season. SDSU was 14-1 last season at Frost Arena, extending its home-court winning streak to 15 games before the loss to Marquette (Wis.) on Dec. 31, 2006.
The Jackrabbits have since won their last 17 home games, completing an undefeated slate during the 2007 calendar year. SDSU's 17-game home winning streak currently ranks in a tie with Tennessee for the third-longest active streak in Division I. Old Dominion (Va.) and Hartford (Conn.) share the longest streak at 19.
FRONT RUNNERS: The Jackrabbits have put together a streak of 47 consecutive wins in games in which they have held a halftime lead.
The streak began Jan. 2, 2006, when SDSU won at Idaho State, 82-70, a game it led 44-28 at the break. Starting then, the Jackrabbits won the final 11 games of the 2005-06 season it led at halftime, all 21 games during the 2006-07 season, and all 14 victories so far this season have come with SDSU holding the lead after the first 20 minutes of play.
The last time SDSU lost a game it led at halftime was on Dec. 21, 2005, at Marquette (Wis.). The Golden Eagles turned a 32-29 deficit into a 67-55 victory in Milwaukee.
SDSU has led at the half in 15 of its 16 victories this season. When trailing or tied at the half, the Jackrabbits have compiled a 1-6 record, with the lone victory coming Feb. 4 at IPFW.
