Late rallies in both the second and fourth sets lifted the South Dakota State volleyball team past Oakland on Friday night in front of 441 Frost Arena Faithful, as the Jackrabbits downed the Golden Grizzlies 3-1.
The win, by the set scores of 25-21, 25-21. 17-25 and 25-22, boosts the Jacks record to an even 7-7 overall and an even 3-3 in The Summit League. The Grizzlies fall to 8-9 overall and 3-3 in league play.
Kaitlin Klingemann tied a career-high and led all players with 14 kills and added four block assists in the win. Bailey Philippot pitched in with 11 kills, her highest output in her short Jackrabbit career.
Shay Birath led the Jackrabbit defense with 23 kills, while Thyele Rechatiko finished with 46 set assists and 14 digs for her team-high sixth double-double of the season.
Brittany Holbrook led three Golden Grizzlies with double-digit kills with 13. Allison Bell added 12 and Jenna Lange 10 kills in the loss.
It felt like the Jackrabbits dominated the first set of the night, but Oakland hung tough, forcing 14 ties and six lead changes, the last coming when the Jacks broke a 19-all tie and closed the set on a 6-2 run.
Oakland led for the majority of the second set, but SDSU rallied late and closed the set with a 6-0 run to take a 2-0 match lead into the break.
Whatever Oakland head coach Rob Beam said to his team in the lockerroom worked, as the Grizzlies came out hot in the third set and cruised to a 25-17 win.
Oakland carried that momentum into the fourth set, opening with a 5-1 run. The Jacks fought back to tie the match at 8-all, thus starting a back-and-forth battle that ended with the Jacks coming back from a 20-22 deficit to win the set 25-22.
The Jackrabbits return to action on Saturday, when they welcome IPFW to Frost Arena at 7 p.m. The defending Summit League Tournament champion Mastodons come to Brookings after downing league favorite North Dakota State on Friday night in Fargo in five sets.
