It looked like it would be a short night for the SDSU volleyball team when they fell 25-16 in the first set of Saturday's Summit League match against IPFW, but the Jackrabbits battled to force extra points in the second set, only to fall again 28-26. The third set looked more like the first, as IPFW rolled to a 25-19 win and the 3-0 sweep of the Jackrabbits in front of 396 fans in Frost Arena.
The loss drops the Jacks to 7-8 overall and 3-4 in The Summit League, while the defending league champions improved to 9-8 overall and 5-2 in league play after their weekend sweep of NDSU and SDSU.
Kelli Fiegen shined bright for the Jacks in the loss in leading the team with 10 kills with just one error in 17 attacks for a .529 hitting percentage. No other Jackrabbit reach the double-digit kill plateau, but Thyele Rechatiko did notch her team-high seventh double-double of the season, and second in as many nights, with 30 set assists and a team-high 16 digs.
Mayara Schlindwein led all players with 17 kills, Stephanie Lamberti added 13 kills in the win.
After falling hard in the first set, the Jacks battled through 14 ties and eight lead changes to force some free volleyball in the second set, but came up just short, 28-26.
The defending champs opened the second set on a 3-0 run and slowly increased their lead before ending the set the same way it began, with a 3-0 run to secure the 3-0 sweep.
The Jackrabbits return to the road for three matches next week, starting with nationally ranked Northern Iowa. The Panthers entered the week ranked No. 15 in the AVCA Coaches Poll and picked up a pair of league wins over the weekend to improve to 14-2 on the season.
SDSU then returns to Summit League play with matches at Western Illinois on Friday and at IUPUI on Saturday.
