CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Northern Iowa proved its No. 14 national ranking on Wednesday with a 3-0 sweep of South Dakota State in non-conference action at the West Gym in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The loss drops the Jackrabbits to 7-9 heading into a weekend of Summit League play. The Panthers improve to 15-2, by the set scores of 25-13, 25-20 and 25-17.
Ketty Cornemann led the Jackrabbits with six kills on the night; Ellyce Youngren added five, while Kelli Fiegen, Kaitlin Klingemann and Bailey Philippot all finished with three kills in the loss.
Beth Discher led three Panthers with double-figure kills with 12, Krista DeGeest added 11 and Michelle Burrow 10 kills in the win.
Northern Iowa scored first and quickly ran away with the first set of the night 25-13. The Jacks scored first in the second set, and pushed the lead to 11-9 before UNI rebounded with a 5-0 run to go up 14-11. The Panthers continued to extend that lead before eventually winning the set 25-20.
The third and final set, despite its eight ties and four lead changes, looked more like the first set, as the Panthers scored five of the last six points to win the set 25-17 and the match 3-0.
The Jackrabbits remain on the road and return to action on Friday, when they travel to Macomb, Ill., to take on Western Illinois in Summit League action. Friday's match begins at 7 p.m.
