MACOMB, Ill. - South Dakota State sophomore Kelli Fiegen broke the Jackrabbit record for hitting percentage in a five set match with 17 kills in 27 swings with just one error for an astounding .593 hitting percentage and led the Jacks to a 3-2 over Western Illinois in the process.
Fiegen breaks the old mark of .550 (12-1-20) set by Kim Bostrom vs. Harding (Ark.), Aug. 31, 2002.
"They fought together as a team and pulled off a big win," head coach Nanabah Allison-Brewer said. "Great job by each of them defensively and offensively, now we need to focus on getting one more for the weekend.
The win by the set scores of 22-25, 25-20, 25-23, 24-26 and 15-12 boosts the Jacks record to 8-9 overall and back to an even 4-4 in The Summit League. The Fighting Leathernecks fall to 5-11 overall and 2-6 in league play.
In addition to her record-breaking hitting percentage, Fiegen led the Jacks with 17 kills and three block assists in the win. She also added a solo block, as did Kaitlin Klingemann, Bailey Philippot, Thyele Rechatiko and Ellyce Youngren, who also finished with 11 kills and 12 blocks for her sixth double-double of the season.
Rechatiko came up two kills shy of a triple-double, but did tally 45 set assists and 14 digs for her team-high eighth double-double of the season. Kelly Herrmann did not record one of the Jacks five solo blocks, but she did finish with 10 kills and 12 digs for her first-career double-double.
Cait Egan led the Leathernecks with 16 kills, Brooke Stittleburg added 15 and Allison Gilbert 11 kills in the loss.
The Jackrabbits try to get back to the .500 mark on the season on Saturday, when they travel to Indianapolis, Ind., to take on the IUPUI Jaguars. The action begins at 7 p.m. ET from the Jungle.
