COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The South Dakota State volleyball team gave head coach Nanabah Allison-Brewer her first 2-0 start in three years on Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 win over the host Falcons at the Air Force Invitational.
The now 2-0 Jackrabbits won by the set scores of 32-30, 25-13, 19-25 and 25-14 and hope to keep the winning going Saturday night against Long Island, a 2009 NCAA Tournament team, at 6 p.m.
Ellyce Youngren led three Jackrabbit hitters in double figures with 15 kills, Kelli Fiegen and Kaitlin Klingemann both finished with 11 kills and both hit over .400 for the match. Fiegen took just 19 swings with three errors to hit .421. Klingemann tallied the same line, but with one less error for a .474 hitting percentage.
Thyele Rechatiko recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 digs to go along with her match-high 42 set assists. Shay Birath led the Jacks with 16 digs, Kelly Herrmann added 14 digs in the win.
Down by as many as seven points in the first set at 14-7, the Jacks continued to fight, and even rallied from a 24-19 deficit to not only tie the first set at 24-all, but eventually come back and win the extended set 32-30.
SDSU used that momentum to roll 25-13 in the second set, only to give it back to the Falcons in a 25-19 third set loss.
The Jacks regained their poise in the fourth set and sent the Falcons into the wild blue yonder with a convincing 25-14 win.
The lone unbeaten team left in the tournament, the Jacks hope to stay that way with a win over Long Island, who lost to the host Falcons on Friday and to Boise State on Saturday afternoon.
