AMES, Iowa - The South Dakota State volleyball team suffered its first loss of the 2010 season on Friday, when they fell to Florida International in its first game of the Iowa State Challenge.
The Jackrabbits fall to 3-1 with the loss by the set scores of 18-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21 and 10-15. The Panthers, who received votes in this week's AVCA Coaches Poll, improve to 2-2 on the season.
Kaitlin Klingemann tied a career-high with 14 kills to lead three Jackrabbit hitters with double-digit kills, and did so by hitting an impressive .500, with just one error in 26 swings. Kelli Fiegen finished with one less kill, but got her 13 kills in just 22 swings and one error for a .545 hitting percentage. Defending Summit League Offensive Player of the Week Ellyce Youngren added 12 kills and tied a career-high in leading the Jacks with 17 digs for her third double-double of the season.
The team traded wins in the first three sets, with the winners pretty much controlling each set, but down 2-1 in the fourth set, the Jackrabbits worked hard to for a fifth set, forcing 13 ties and seven lead changes before eventually pulling out the 25-21 win and forcing a fifth set.
The Panthers opened an early 4-1 lead in the final set, something the Jacks could never really recover from. Down 10-5, SDSU did rally to get within two points at 10-8, but FIU scored the next three points to put the set out of reach.
The Jacks return to action on Saturday at 11 a.m., when they face No. 12 Iowa State. The host Cyclones entered the weekend 1-1 overall and play North Dakota State on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
