South Dakota State sophomore, and reigning Summit League Offensive Player of the Week, Kelli Fiegen hit .478 with 13 kills on Friday in leading the Jackrabbits to a home and Summit League opening 3-1 win over UMKC in front of a raucous 914 fans in Frost Arena.
After dropping the first set 20-25, the Jacks bounced back to win the next three sets 25-19, 25-19 and 25-23 to improve to 4-3 on the season and 1-0 in league play. The Kangaroos fall to 3-7 overall and 0-1 in Summit League play.
Despite her impressive hitting percentage, Fiegen did not lead the Jackrabbits in kills, that honor went to Kaitlin Klingemann, who finished the night with a game-high 14. Ellyce Youngren added seven kills and Thyele Rechatiko six kills to go along with her 34 set assists and 13 digs.
Christina McQuin led four 'Roos in double figures with 12 kills. Kelsey Knoche, Elizabeth Beck and Emily Lucas all finished the match with 10 kills, with Knoche adding 10 digs to complete the double-double.
The Jacks started hot with a 4-0 run, but quickly cooled off, as the 'Roos answered with an 8-1 run to go up 8-5. SDSU did fight back to force four more ties, but they could not swing the momentum back and could never regain the lead.
After falling into 0-2 holes in both the second and third sets, the Jacks battled back to win each set 25-19, setting up a back-and-forth final set.
The fifth set featured 15 ties and three lead changes, with the Jacks trailing for the majority of the set. Rechatiko broke the final tie, when she pushed an unassisted kill over the net to put the Jacks up for good at 22-21, before Fiegen ended the match with a powerful kill across the Kangaroo defense.
The Jackrabbits return to action on Saturday against Southern Utah in Frost Arena at 7 p.m. The Thunderbirds fell 3-0 to league favorite North Dakota State on Friday in Fargo.
