The South Dakota State volleyball team rallied from an 0-2 hole to force a fifth set, but the Jackrabbits eventually came up short in the deciding set to lose the match 3-2.
The Jackrabbits fall to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in The Summit League by the set scores of 16-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-20 and 14-16. Southern Utah improves to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Kelli Fiegen led the Jacks with 16 kills, Kaitlin Klingemann added 14 in the loss, but did hit .414, with just two errors in 29 swings. Ellyce Youngren pitched in with nine kills , while Newcomer Bailey Philippot saw her first action as a Jackrabbit in the match, and finished with seven kills, as did Ketty Cornemann, who did not commit an attack error in 18 attempts, good for a .389 hitting percentage.
Analaine Pelaez led the Southern Utah attack with 24 kills, Jazmine Ma'afala added 15 and Cashaana Renfro 10 kills in the Thunderbird win.
The T-Birds put the Jacks on their heels right away, easily winning the first two sets, only to see the Jackrabbits come out refocused after the break to win the next two sets convincingly and force the fifth and final set.
The final set saw a total of six ties and three lead changes, more than any other set, but it looked like the Jacks would get the win when Pelaez served into the net to put the Jacks up 14-13, but Youngren returned the favor to tie the set at 14-all.
With the momentum back on their side, SUU scored the next two points to give the Jacks a Summit League split on opening weekend.
The Jackrabbits return to action next weekend in Fargo, N.D., at the NDSU Tournament with matches against North Dakota, North Dakota State and South Dakota all on the slate.
