TULSA, Okla. - Just two days after starting its second win streak of the season, the South Dakota State volleyball team fell back into the loss column with a close 3-1 loss to Oral Roberts on Sunday afternoon in Tulsa, Okla., by the set scores of 25-27, 18-25, 25-23 and 22-25.
The loss drops the Jackrabbits to 6-7 on the season overall and 2-3 in Summit League play. Oral Roberts improves to the same 6-7 record, but with a 4-2 mark in league play.
Kelli Fiegen and Ellyce Youngren led the Jacks with 13 kills each and both in impressive fashion. Fiegen took 25 swings and committed three errors for an even .400 hitting percentage. Youngren also regained her form, recording her 13 kills on 30 swings with just two miscues for a .367 hitting percentage.
Kaitlin Klingemann added 11 kills in the loss, and hit .375 with a pair of errors in 24 attacks.
Tatum Fredeen's match-high 18 kills led four Golden Eagles with double figure kills in the win. Serena Cate added 17, while Olivia Ophus and Laura Taylor both finished with 12 kills. Taylor added 50 set assists and 10 digs to complete the triple-double and Cate added 10 digs for the match's only double-double.
Down 24-21 in a first set that featured 14 ties and four lead changes, the Jacks battled back to tie the set at 24 and again at 25 before ORU closed out the 27-25 win.
The kept it close early in the second set, but a 5-0 run stretched the Golden Eagle lead from 12-10 to 17-10 and the Jacks never recovered and fell behind two sets to none.
Needing a win to force a fourth set, SDSU opened the third set on a 3-0 run and held off a late ORU rally to win the set 25-23.
ORU turned the tables in the fourth and final set by taking the early lead and holding off the Jackrabbits late to secure the set and match win.
After two weeks on the road, the Jackrabbits return home next weekend to host Oakland on Friday and IPFW on Saturday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. in Frost Arena.
