AMES, IOWA - The South Dakota State volleyball team dropped its second straight match on Saturday, when the fell to No. 12 Iowa State on the second day of the Iowa State Challenge.
The loss drops the Jackrabbits to 3-2 on the season, while the Cyclones improve to 4-1 by the set scores of 25-17, 26-24 and 25-22.
Kelli Fiegen led the Jackrabbits with 13 kills in the loss and hit .321 (13-4-28), Ellyce Youngren finished the match with nine kills.
Carly Jenson and Victoria Henson led the Cyclones with 13 kills, Kelsey Petersen added 11 and Jamie Straube 10 kills in the win.
The Jacks stayed with the ranked Cyclones early on in the first set, but ISU used a 5-0 run to go up 18-11 and put the first set out of reach.
SDSU trailed by as many as six points in the second set at 17-11, but fought back to tie the set at 22, 23 and 24-all before the Cyclones scored the last two points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set went much like the second, with the Jacks battling back from an early deficit to tie the match at 18-all, but Iowa State pulled away down the stretch to secure the sweep and send the Jacks to their second straight loss.
The Jackrabbits return to action on Sunday in the final match of the Iowa State Challenge against Green Bay at 1 p.m.
