AMES, Iowa - Just a week after opening the season with a perfect 3-0 record, the South Dakota State volleyball team fell to 3-3 on Sunday with a tough five set loss to the Green Bay Phoenix in the final match of the Iowa State Challenge.
The Jacks fell to the Phoenix, who improve to 2-5 with the win, by the set scores of 25-27, 25-20, 25-14, 16-25 and 15-12.
Ellyce Youngren led the Jackrabbits with 17 kills and completed her team-high fourth double-double of the season with 13 digs. Kaitlin Klingemann added 12 kills and Kelli Fiegen nine in the loss. Shay Birath led the SDSU defense with 24 digs, while freshman Lexi Fowler saw her first significant action as a Jackrabbit at setter and led the Jacks with 22 set assists.
Kara Lindstedt led three Phoenix in double figures with 18 kills, Abbey Gitter added 17 and Carlie Willison 10 kills in the win.
Both the Jacks and Phoenix played close throughout the first two sets, which features a total of 20 ties and ten lead changes, with Green Bay taking the first set and the Jacks winning the second set.
Unlike the first two sets, the third set did not see a single tie or lead change, as the Jackrabbits jumped out to 10-3 lead and cruised to a 25-14 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
SDSU kept it rolling early in the fourth set with an early 4-1 lead, but the Phoenix got hot and used a 7-0 run to go up 7-4 and never trailed again in the 25-16 win to force the fifth and deciding set.
The final set looked more like the first two, with five ties and a pair of lead changes before the Phoenix finally came out with the 15-12 win.
The Jackrabbits look to get back on the winning track on Friday, when they open the home portion of their schedule and Summit League play against UMKC.
The action from Frost Arena gets underway at 7 p.m.
