PEORIA, Ill. — Greg Vollmer turned in a fifth-place individual finish to lead the South Dakota State men's cross country team to a third-place standing at the Bradley University Cross Country Classic Friday at Newman Golf Course.
A senior from Rapid City, Vollmer covered the 8,000-meter course in 25 minutes, 3.5 secons. Ross Clarke of Butler (Ind.) was the individual champion with a time of 24:20.9.
Jared Ailts and freshman Trent Lusignan also recorded top-20 finishes for SDSU. Ailts crossed the line in 25:21.0 to place 17th, while Lusignan finished 19th in 25:21.4. Other scoring runners for the Jackrabbits were Kyle Schmidt, 26th overall in 25:35.2 and Greg Beesley, 59th overall in 26:18.7.
Drake (Iowa) captured the team title with 76 points. Wichita State (Kan.) was second in the 19-team field with 111 points, followed by SDSU in third with 122.
The Jackrabbits are scheduled to defend their Summit League title Oct. 29 in Tulsa, Okla. The Summit League Championships will be held on the campus of Oral Roberts University.
