Jackrabbit men dominate in season debut

MACOMB, Ill. -- In its season debut, South Dakota State went an impressive 16-3 on day one of the Art Peterson Invitational. SDSU wrapped up both doubles flights and three of the four singles flights.
"We played good tennis for our first matches of the year," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "As a team, we went 16-3, so we can't be disappointed with the results. However, we still had a lot of moments we need to improve on.
In doubles action, Parker Lawley and Marco Paulo Castro and Jackrabbit teammates Gary Notkin and Mateus Moreira both advanced to tomorrow's semifinals with 6-1 and 6-2 wins, respectively. In the second flight, Connor Tieszen/Jonny Higham and Stefano Blatt/Lovro Curcija both received byes.
In his Jackrabbit debut, Tieszen received a first-round bye and then defeated USI's Aaron Barris, 7-6, 6-3. In the same flight, Moreira went 2-0 with wins over WUI's Chris Bunch, 6-1, 6-3 and Lindenwood's Johannes Rabenhorst, 6-1, 6-3.
In the third flight, Curcija went 2-0 with wins over TSU's Paul Province, 6-0, 6-2 and Lindenwood's Slobodam Bavrlic, 6-0, 6-0. He will face teammate Jonny Higham in tomorrow's finals as Higham advanced with 6-3, 7-6 and 6-3, 6-2 wins over foes from Lindenwood and WUI.
Freshmen Marco Paulo Castro and Stefano Blatt each had impressive collegiate debuts, each winning their first match. Paulo went on to advance to tomorrow's final against teammate Gary Notkin, who went 2-0 with wins over TSU and Blatt.
Flight 1 is the lone flight that SDSU did not wrap up on the first day as Parker Lawley went 1-1 and Henrique Pereira went 0-2.
"We need to find the next level of intensity tomorrow," Engdahl added.
Tomorrow's action will begin at 9 a.m. on the campus of Western Illinois University.
