BROOKINGS, S.D.—The South Dakota State volleyball team concludes its two-match road swing when it travels to Fargo, N.D., to take on North Dakota State tonight at 7 p.m. in Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.
The Jackrabbits (3-20, 2-5) enter the match with a two-match winning streak after defeating Western Illinois in four sets Oct. 16. With the wins, SDSU sits eighth in The Summit League standings.
The Bison (13-9, 4-4) pulled an upset Oct. 18, defeating league-leading Denver in five sets in Fargo. With the win, NDSU moved up to fifth in the league standings.

Setting the Scene
- South Dakota State's two-match winning streak is the longest since 2014 when it beat Weber State, UMES and Fairleigh Dickinson at the Hawk's Holiday Hallabaloo in Princess Anne, Md. The Jackrabbits' last Summit League winning streak was when they defeated Omaha and Western Illinois in Frost Arena Nov. 18-19, 2013.
- North Dakota State leads the all-time series, which began Nov. 1, 1974, 69-15, and has won the last five meetings. SDSU's last win over the Bison was in four sets Sept. 16, 2012, in Frost Arena. The last road victory was Oct. 15, 2006, in five sets.
- SDSU sports a 201-231 all-time road record and is 24-45 in road Summit League matches since 2007. The last back-to-back Summit League road wins was 2010 when the Jacks won at UMKC and Southern Utah.
A Quick Glance at South Dakota State (3-20, 2-5)
- SDSU's starting lineup includes seniors Wagner Larson and Kacey Herrmann in the middle, junior Nazya Thies and sophomore Mikala Hora on the outside, sophomore Ashley Beaner on the right side, freshman Mattison Munger setting and senior Lizzie Palmer as the libero.
- Senior Alana Pengilly and freshman Ellie Benson are the first subs for the Jacks.
- The Jackrabbits are hitting .116 and averaging 9.29 kills per set. Hora leads the Jackrabbits in kills (181) and kills per set (2.32) and Larson has a team-leading .255 hitting percentage.
- Munger is South Dakota State's primary setter, but junior Brooke Leetham has come into matches to relieve Munger. The rookie is averaging 7.49 set assists while the team averages 8.85.
- Munger tops the team in service aces with 14.
- Palmer leads the defensive corps with a 3.61 digs per set average. Hora is second with a 2.72 average.
- The Jackrabbits are holding their own in blocking (99.0, 1.27 bps). Herrmann leads the team with 6 solo and 43 total blocks.Â
North Dakota State (13-9, 4-4)
- North Dakota State looks to win its second consecutive match in a row after upsetting Denver Oct. 18 in five sets.
- NDSU is hitting .221 overall as a team with its offensive attack coming from outside hitter Jenni Fassbender. The senior leads the squad in kills per set (3.39).
- North Dakota State has five players hitting higher than .200 with junior middle hitter Emily Minnick leading the way with a .322 hitting percentage.
- The Bison run a 6-2 offense with setters Brianna Rasmusson and Monica Claxton. Rasmusson averages 6.46 set assists and 2.26 digs per set. Claxton averages 4.79 set assists and 2.08 digs.
- NDSU has 155 total blocks this season, including 75 solo blocks. Minnick leads the team (67). The Bison also have five other players with 20-or-more total blocks.
Last North Dakota State Match

FARGO—Tiara Gibson was in double digits in kills, but the South Dakota State volleyball team lost 25-16, 25-16 and 25-21 at North Dakota State in a Summit League match.
Gibson had a team-best 11 kills, hit .500 and had two total blocks. Kacey Herrmann recorded a team-leading 15 digs and Alanna Pengilly added 13.
After trailing 7-2 in the first set, SDSU used a 5-0 run that included a pair of kills from Gibson, to pull within one, 9-8. Leading 13-11, NDSU then went on a 10-3 run to take a 23-14 lead and then the set.
In set two, the Jackrabbits had three consecutive kills from Gibson and Emily Veldman to tie the set at 6-all, but the Bison used a 10-2 run to push the score to 16-8. NDSU outscored SDSU 9-8 for the win.
The Jackrabbits forced two ties early in the third set before using a 6-2 run to take a 12-11 lead on three consecutive Gibson kills. SDSU held onto a two-point lead, 18-16, until the Bison used a 5-2 run to take a 21-20 lead. NDSU scored the final four of five points in the match for the win.
Jenni Fassbender led North Dakota State with 14 kills. The Bison also had 4 solo blocks and 10 block assists in the match.
Last Outing
- Oct. 16, 2015—SDSU 3, Western Illinois 1
MACOMB, Ill.—Mikala Hora and Ashley Beaner dominated offensively in the Jackrabbits' 23-25, 25-19, 25-23 and 25-19 win over Western Illinois in Summit League action.
Hora had a career- and match-high 25 kills while hitting .413 and collecting her sixth double-double with 17 digs. Beaner also posted a career high with 20 kills and hit a personal-best .633 (20-1-30). Nazya Thies added 11 kills, 8 digs and 2 solo blocks. Defensively, Lizzie Palmer had a match-best 22 digs.
Peyton Crosser led Western Illinois with 21 kills and Kaili Simmons had 14 digs.
In the first set, after eight ties, including at 22-22, Wagner Larson registered a kill to give the Jackrabbits a 23-22 lead. Western Illinois then used a block and three SDSU hitting errors to win the set.
After trailing 12-9, the Jackrabbits used a 7-1 run to take a 16-14 lead in the second set. SDSU then closed the set on a 9-5 run fueled by five Hora kills to tie the match.
Beaner and Thies registered the final four kills in the third set to take a 2-1 lead.
In the final set, the teams were tied at 15 before Hora, Beaner and Thies collected eight kills during a 10-4 run.
Milestones
- Lizzie Palmer and Alana Pengilly could record 1,000 career digs this season. Palmer stands at 977 while Pengilly has 854.
- Kacey Herrmann has 683 digs and needs 17 for 700 career digs.
Double-Doubles
- Mikala Hora recorded her sixth career double-doubles Oct. 16. The outside hitter had a career-high 25 kills and 17 digs at Western Illinois.
- Rookie Mattison Munger registered her fourth career double-double in three sets vs. South Dakota Oct. 13. The setter had 35 set assists and 11 digs.
