BROOKINGS, S.D.—Dec. 15, 2015—The South Dakota State University women's basketball team used a 20-4 run in the first quarter and recorded an 88-79 victory over No. 16 DePaul Tuesday night in nonconference action at Frost Arena with 1,621 fans in attendance.
The Jackrabbits, now 9-2, were led by Macy Miller's (Mitchell) 19 points. Freshman guard Madison Guebert (Apple Valley, Minn.) added a career-high 16 points, fueled by four 3-point field goals while junior forward Clarissa Ober (Glencoe, Minn.) recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Gabrielle Boever (Worthington, Minn.) picked up 11 points, 5 steals and 4 assists in 27 minutes as a reserve. Junior guard Kerri Young (Mitchell) recorded a game- and career-high 8 assists to go with 7 rebounds and 7 points.
DePaul, 7-4, was led by Chanise Jenkins' game-high 22 points. Megan Podkowa added 21 points and 11 rebounds. Brooke Schulte and Jessica January added 14 and 13 points, respectively.
The last ranked team to lose in Frost Arena was then-No. 12 Penn State, 83-79, Dec. 11, 2013.
The Blue Demons took a 9-8 lead after a Schulte 3-pointer with 7:41 to play in the opening quarter. Seven Jackrabbits then scored as SDSU erupted on a 20-4 run, capped by sophomore forward Ellie Thompson's (Chaska, Minn.) conventional three-point play with 1:35 left in the quarter. South Dakota State forced DePaul to commit seven turnovers in the first quarter.
DePaul cut the lead to eight, 34-26, when Jenkins made a 3-pointer at 6:06 to play in the second quarter. South Dakota State answered with an 8-0 run capped by Miller's layup with 2:22 left in the half for a 42-26 lead. The Jacks led 47-32 at halftime.
The Blue Demons opened the third quarter with an 18-6 run when Schulte scored at 2:57 to make it 53-50. The teams traded baskets before Miller scored at 1:44 left in the quarter and senior guard Chloe Cornemann (Yankton) sank a 3-point field goal with 11 seconds remaining for a 60-52 lead after three quarters.
South Dakota State pushed the lead to 15, 75-60, when Guebert sank her fourth 3-point field goal at 4:38. DePaul cut the lead to five, 84-79, with 35 seconds remaining but the Jackrabbits closed the game with four-straight points.
The Jackrabbits close their nonconference schedule by playing at Green Bay at 5 p.m. Saturday and at Bowling Green at 6 p.m. Monday.
