GREEN BAY, Wis.—Sophomore forward Ellie Thompson scored a game-high 15 points but it wasn't enough as the South Dakota State women's basketball team lost 58-57 to Green Bay in a nonconference game in front of 2,527 fans at the Kress Center.
The Jackrabbits, 9-3, had a chance for the win with 1.0 second left but a 3-point shot by junior Clarissa Ober (Glencoe, Minn.) off an inbounds pass missed.
Junior Kerri Young (Mitchell) and sophomore Macy Miller (Mitchell) each had 13 points. Miller also had six rebounds and five assists. Ober finished with seven rebounds.
Green Bay, 8-2, was led by Allie LeClaire with 14 points and Mehryn Kraker with 12 points.
SDSU held a five-point lead, 54-49, after Thompson sank a 3-pointer with 6:13 to play. The Phoenix then scored nine-straight points, four from LeClaire and a 3-pointer from Sam Terry, to take a 58-54 lead at 2:15. Young scored the Jackrabbits last points with a 3-pointer with 1:46 to play.
In the first quarter, the Jackrabbits used an 8-0 run, fueled by four points from Thompson (Chaska, Minn.), to take a 14-5 at 5:01. SDSU lead 18-14 at the end of the quarter.
Green Bay scored 12 of the first 14 points of the second quarter before Miller sank a 3-pointer, senior Gabrielle Boever (Worthington, Minn.) had a steal and layup and Miller added a layup to put SDSU up 27-26 with 3:34 to play. Young scored five points in the final minute to give the Jackrabbits the 32-27 lead at halftime.
The Jackrabbits return to action Monday when they play at Bowling Green at 6 p.m.
