KANSAS CITY, MO. — In its last match before Summit League action begins, the South Dakota State men's tennis team bested Rockhurst, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the Loyola Park Tennis Courts.
"I'm so proud of the fight the guys had today,” head coach Michael Engdahl said. “We had over eight hours on court yesterday. To come and battle the way we did today was awesome to see. The boys should be proud and ready for conference matches next weekend.”
The Jackrabbits won five singles matches, including four in straight sets. At first singles, Andrea Boglic dispatched Truit Gray, 6-4, 6-4. Parker Lawley swept Decho Valey at third singles in dominating fashion, 6-0, 6-0 to close the weekend undefeated at 3-0.
Lovro Curcija also closed his weekend a perfect 3-0 after a 6-2, 6-1 win over Daniel Chmielewski at fourth singles. Gary Notkin defeated Nicolas Riveros at sixth singles, 6-4, 6-1, while Henrique Pereira bested Oskar Unger, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 at second singles.
Lawley and Boglic secured the doubles point for South Dakota State in dramatic fashion, winning the tiebreaker to post a 9-8 victory over Unger and Gray. They went 3-0 at first doubles this weekend. At third doubles, Curcija and Pereira posted an 8-2 win.
The Jackrabbits, who are now 9-6 on the season, open Summit League play Saturday, March 28 with matches against Oral Roberts and IUPUI in Indianapolis, Ind.
