FORT WAYNE, IND. — Oral Roberts ended the South Dakota State men's tennis team's season with a 4-2 victory in the Summit League Tournament quarterfinals Friday morning at Carroll High School.
"We came out slower than we wanted to today but had an incredible turn around in singles," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "Unfortunately, we ran into a tough ORU team that played great. This year the Summit League was very deep, and every game was anyone's game. We proved we could hang with every team, and I'm proud of our boys."
After dropping the doubles point, the Jackrabbits got back into the match with a pair of straight-set victories at second and fourth singles. Henrique Pereira dispatched Alejandro Capdequi, 6-4, 6-0, at second singles while Lovro Curcija toppled Alvaro Santamaria, 6-3, 6-4, at fourth singles.
The Golden Eagles clinched the victory when Jan Pehnec defeated Parker Lawley in a tightly contested third singles match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. The loss marked the end of Lawley, Andrea Boglic and Gary Notkin's time at South Dakota State.
"Our seniors are going to be missed tremendously," Engdahl said. "They all played key roles in putting Jackrabbit tennis on the map and had great success along the way. It's hard to imagine Jackrabbit tennis without them, but they set great examples for current and future Jackrabbits to follow."
South Dakota State concluded the 2015 campaign with a 14-10 (3-3 SL) record.
NOTES: Curcija ended the season on a six-match winning streak and with a team-high 15 wins ... Pereira and Curcija are two of three Jackrabbits to win a point at the Summit League Tournament; Lawley became the first to do so in the 2014 Summit League semifinals ... South Dakota State's two points is a program-best mark.
