FORT WAYNE, Ind.—The South Dakota State University women's basketball team outscored Fort Wayne 18-8 in the fourth quarter and recorded a 61-42 win Wednesday night in Summit League action in the Gates Sports Center.
The Jackrabbits, 14-3 overall, 4-0 in league play, had three players score in double figures. Freshman guard Madison Guebert (Apple Valley, Minn.) had a team-high 15 points, connecting on five 3-pointers. Sophomore forward Ellie Thompson (Chaska, Minn.) recorded 14 points and 8 rebounds while classmate Macy Miller (Mitchell) had 13 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Junior guard Kerri Young (Mitchell) filled the stat sheet with eight points, six rebounds, seven assists, a career-high three blocks and two steals.
Fort Wayne, 4-12, 0-3, got 12 points from Kamilah Carter.
The Mastodons, who were as close as 25-24 early in the second half, were within seven points, 41-34, with 51 seconds left in the third quarter after Peyton Fallis sank a pair of free throws.
Junior center Clarissa Ober (Glencoe, Minn.) opened the fourth quarter with a layup to ignite the Jackrabbits' offense. Miller and Thompson combined for 10 points and Guebert six points in the 18-8 run.
Guebert scored nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from 3-point range to keep the Jackrabbits in the lead in the first half. After leading 14-12 at the end of the first quarter, SDSU got four points from senior guard Gabrielle Boever (Worthington, Minn.) to fuel a 6-2 run in the final 2:56 of the second quarter for a 25-21 halftime lead.
The Jackrabbits return to action Sunday when they host South Dakota at 2 p.m. in the South Dakota Corn South Dakota Showdown Series in the friendly confines of Frost Arena.
