BROOKINGS, S.D.—Jan. 17, 2016—Despite having three players score in double figures, the South Dakota State University women's basketball team suffered a 63-58 loss to the University of South Dakota in The Summit League action Sunday afternoon in front of 4,082 fans at Frost Arena. The game is part of the South Dakota Showdown Series, sponsored by South Dakota Corn.
South Dakota State, now 14-4 overall and 4-1 in The Summit League, was led by sophomore guard Macy Miller (Mitchell) with 20 points. Junior forward Clarissa Ober (Glencoe, Minn.) added 10 points, 8 rebounds and a school-record tying 8 blocked shots. Freshman guard Madison Guebert (Apple Valley, Minn.) also scored 10 points.
USD's Nicole Seekamp led the Coyotes on a 7-0 run in the game's final 54 seconds for a game-high 23 points.
Guebert gave the Jackrabbits a 58-56 lead with a 3-point field goal with 1:14 left. Seekamp tied the game by making two free throws with 53.7 seconds remaining. After South Dakota State missed a shot in the lane, Seekamp then made a 3-point field goal with 15 seconds left. The Jackrabbits missed a 3-pointer and Seekamp made two foul shots for the final margin.
The teams traded the lead in the first quarter, which ended in a 15-15 tie. USD took a 23-18 lead when Kelly Stewart sank one free throw with 6:13 to play in the second quarter. The Jackrabbits responded with a 12-0 run, fueled by five points each by Miller and Guebert. The Jackrabbits held a 32-25 lead at halftime.
Stewart sank two free throws to make it 38-37 with 5:21 to play in the third quarter before both teams went cold. South Dakota State sophomore forward Ellie Thompson (Chaska, Minn.) scored on a putback with 22 seconds remaining to give the Jacks a 40-37 lead after three quarters. Thompson snared a game-high nine rebounds and recorded a career-high six assists.
USD improved to 13-5 overall and 4-1 in The Summit League.
