IOWA CITY, Iowa—South Dakota State junior
Macy Miller scored the game-winning jumper at the buzzer as the Jackrabbits defeated Iowa, 66-64, Sunday afternoon in the Hawkeye Challenge in front of 3,826 fans in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
SDSU improves to 4-0, marking the best start to the season since 2008-09. Iowa falls to 4-1.
Miller, who was named the tournament MVP, broke a 64-64 tie after Iowa's Megan Gustafson scored a put-back basket with five second remaining.
The Mitchell native recorded a game-high 22 points and a team-and personal-best 10 rebounds to record her third collegiate double-double. Senior
Clarissa Ober finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Junior
Ellie Thompson netted 11 points and sophomore
Madison Guebert added 10 points and 3 steals. The trio was named to the all-tournament team.
Gustafson led Iowa with 21 points and 13 rebounds while Ally Disterhoft had 16 points.
After leading 38-25 at halftime, the Jackrabbits took its largest lead of the game when Ober hit a 3-pointer with 1:02 left in the third quarter. Guebert then sank a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to put SDSU up 54-41 at the end of the quarter.
Iowa battled back in the fourth quarter, using a 12-4 run to pull within five, 58-53, on a Gustafson layup with 5:05 remaining. Miller sank her lone 3-pointer of the game to put the Jacks up by eight, 61-53, but a 9-2 Hawkeye run cut the lead to 63-62 game.
With 20 second left, Miller made the first of a two free throws to put South Dakota State up 64-62. Hawkeye Tania Davis then missed a layup with five seconds before Gustafson's put-back basket.
