SAN ANTONIO, Texas—For the second time this season, the South Dakota State women's tennis team came close to its third win of the season, but the Jackrabbits lost 4-3 Friday to Incarnate Word at the Mabry Tennis Center.
With the loss, SDSU drops to 2-4 and UIW improves to 1-3.
"Our women are showing tremendous fight in some tough conditions. We really chose to challenge ourselves. You can tell we were a bit sluggish after a long van ride coupled with temps over 80 degrees," sixth-year head coach Michael Engdahl said. "Once we got adjusted, we played great tennis and showed the true personality of the team we want to be. We are extremely close to the team we want to be and these matches are going to fall our way in no time."
The Jackrabbits won the doubles point for the third consecutive match. Senior Iasmin Rosa and Ffion Davies won their third match of the season, 6-3, at No. 1. Senior Tacy Haws-Lay and freshman Morgan Brower won their fourth match in the last five outings, 6-2, at No. 3.
Rosa improved to 4-2 at No. 1 singles with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Rachel Sadiq. Haws-Lay won her first match at No. 3, defeating Victoria Kareh, 6-3, 7-6. The match came down for No. 2 singles where senior Davies won the first set, 6-3, but then lost 6-3 in the second. UIW's Matea Zemunik then clinched the match for the Falcons with a 6-2 win in the final set.
SDSU returns to action Saturday when it plays at Texas of the Permian Basin at 2:30 p.m.
