HUNTSVILLE, Texas—Despite winning the doubles point for the sixth time this season, the South Dakota State women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 match to Sam Houston State Sunday afternoon at the McAdams Tennis Center.
The loss drops the Jackrabbits to 3-5 overall and the Bearkats improve to 4-2.
"We had good fight today, but after our match today I think it is gut-check time for our team. We have had several opportunities over the last few weeks to close matches out and we just haven't been able to capitalize," sixth-year head coach Michael Engdahl said. "With the experience and grit we have on this team, we need to keep our heads high and focus on getting on the right track. We have an amazing group of players. If anyone can handle a few bumps in the road it is them. We need to take advantage of the next few weeks and get ready for our matches in Sioux Falls."
Seniors Iasmin Rosa and Ffion Davies improved to 5-3 at No. 1 doubles with a 6-0 win vs. Mila Milanovic and Carrie Casey. At No. 2 doubles, seniors Florencia Magni and Beatriz Souza defeated Maddie Mortimore and Ema Barkovic, 7-5, to improve to 4-3. Senior Tacy Haws-Lay and freshman Morgan Brower won their fifth consecutive match at No. 3, defeating Fabienne Gettwart and Caitlyn Mitchell, 6-2.
The Bearkats swept the singles matches, with Rosa coming the closets to a win, falling 6-4, 3-6, 3-6 to Gettwart at No. 1.
The Jackrabbits return to action Feb. 26 when they host North Dakota and William Jewell at Huether Family Match Pointe in Sioux Falls.
