SIOUX FALLS, S.D.—Senior Ffion Davies came through big as the South Dakota State women's tennis team won its home opener, 4-3, over North Dakota Friday morning at the Huether Family Match Pointe in Sioux Falls.
With the match tied 3-3 and trailing by a set, Davies rallied with a come-from-behind win, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, to pick up her third victory at No. 2.
"This morning wasn't our best tennis, but it was awesome to see the team fight and pick up the win anyway they could," sixth-year head coach Michael Engdahl said. "We needed a close match like this to fall on our side, and the way we won showed the guts we have been looking for this year. Hopefully, we can carry the momentum into the match this evening."
The Jackrabbits, who had won their last five doubles point, fell behind to the Fighting Hawks, 1-0, when they lost at No. 1 and No. 2. Senior Tacy Haws-Lay and freshman Morgan Brower extended their winning streak at No. 3 to six matches with a 6-3 win over Aliza Beming and Courtney Brackin.
SDSU took a 3-1 lead in the match when senior Beatriz Souza won (6-0, 6-2) at No. 5, Brower (6-2, 6-2) at No. 6 and senior Florencia Magni (6-2, 7-5) at No. 3.
UND tied the match and setup the Davies' come-from-behind victory with a pair of wins. Haws-Lay lost in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 4 and junior Iasmin Rosa fell in a hard-fought match, 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3 at No. 1.
The Jackrabbits return to action tonight when they host William Jewell at 7 p.m.
