BROOKINGS, S.D.—After starting the season on the road for eight-straight matches, the South Dakota State women's tennis team plays its first home matches this Friday. The Jackrabbits host North Dakota at 10 a.m. and William Jewell at 7 p.m. at Huether Family Match Pointe in Sioux Falls.
"This weekend is a big opportunity for our women's team to play in front of our friends and family this weekend. The travel schedule took a toll on us to start the season, but we are starting to find our groove in practice," sixth-year head coach Michael Engdahl said. "I think having these home matches will give us the spark we need to really come together and play the type of tennis we know we can play. Everyone is excited to play in South Dakota and it should be a great weekend for Jackrabbit tennis."
The Jackrabbits are 3-5 on the year after going 1-2 Feb. 12-14. They lost a tight match at Incarnate Word (4-3), defeated Texas-Permian Basin (5-2) and then fell 6-1 at Sam Houston State.
Senior Iasmin Rosa leads the Jacks with a 5-3 record at No. 1 singles. In doubles, SDSU has exceled, winning the point in six of its eight matches. Rosa and senior Ffion Davies are 5-3 at No. 1 and have won their last three matches. Senior Tacy Haws-Lay and freshman Morgan Brower are 6-2 with five-straight wins at No. 2 and No. 3 while seniors Florencia Magni and Beatriz Souza are 5-3 at No. 2 and No. 3.
North Dakota is 1-10 on the season and has dropped its last five matches. Last weekend, it lost a pair of Big Sky Conference matches to Eastern Washington (6-1) and to Weber State (4-3).
Junior Lacey Sprinkel leads UND with a 4-5 record at No. 1 singles. Junior Faith Lee has won her last two matches at No. 3. In doubles, Sprinkel and sophomore Mimi Yunker are 6-5 at No. 1.
William Jewell is 4-2 on the season after defeating Baker University, 6-3, Feb. 13. Senior Sabrine Navarro is 2-0 on the year after winning matches at No. 3 and No. 4. The No. 1 doubles team of senior Savannah Drew and junior Lauren Huddlestun are 4-1 as is the No. 2 doubles team of Navarro and freshman Lisanne Visseren.
