ORLANDO, Fla.—For the second time this spring, Ffion Davies has come up big for the South Dakota State women's tennis team. The senior recorded the match-winning point in a 4-3 win over Florida A&M Tuesday. SDSU also won its fourth-straight match, defeating Hampton, 6-1.
With SDSU trailing 3-2, Davies won the first set, 6-4, but dropped the second, 2-6. In the third, she took control, winning, 6-2.
With the wins the Jackrabbits are 7-5 overall and 4-0 in neutral site matches.
"The team started their spring break trip off on the right foot with two solid wins today. We played great tennis and came up clutch when we needed to," sixth-year head coach Michael Engdahl said. "Now, we need to focus on getting a bit more energy and intensity in our matches and we are going to be an extremely tough team to beat."
SDSU won the doubles point for the ninth time this season winning at No. 1 and No. 3. Senior Tacy Haws-Lay and freshman Morgan Brower won their eighth match of the season with a 7-6 win at No. 3. Davies and classmate Iasmin Rosa improved to 7-4 at No. 1.
Leading 1-0 in the match, Florida A&M won the next two matches as Haws-Lay dropped a 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 and senior Beatriz Souza fell 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 at No. 5.
Brower won her third consecutive match at No. 6, winning 6-4, 6-4 to tie the match at 2-2. At No. 1, Rosa won in two sets, 6-4, 7-6 to give SDSU the 3-2 lead. Senior Florencia Magni lost in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 4 to set up Davies' match-winning performance.
Against Hampton, South Dakota State SDSU won the doubles point for the eighth time this season, winning all three matches. Haws-Lay and Brower their ninth match of the season at No. 3 and are 9-2 in dual matches with a nine-match win streak.
In singles, three Jackrabbits won their third match in a row. Davies won at No. 2, 6-3, 6-3 and Souza won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5. Brower improved to 5-3 at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-3 win.
The Jackrabbits return to action Thursday when they play James Madison at 9:30 a.m. and Saint Francis (Ill.) at 5 p.m.
