MACOMB, Ill.—Sophomore forward Ellie Thompson (Chaska, Minn.) scored with 13 seconds left to play to lift the South Dakota State University women's basketball team to a 66-65 win over Western Illinois Saturday afternoon in The Summit League play in front of 1,072 fans in Western Hall.
The Jackrabbits, who close the regular season 23-6 overall and 13-3 in league play, were led by junior forward Clarissa Ober (Glencoe, Minn.). Ober recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 18 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Thompson finished with 13 points while sophomore guard Macy Miller (Mitchell) and freshman guard Madison Guebert (Apple Valley, Minn.) each scored 12 points.
Western Illinois (15-14, 8-8) was led by Michelle Maher's game-high 21 points.
SDSU led 19-18 after the first quarter, but Ober opened the second quarter with eight-straight points to fuel a 14-4 run and put the Jackrabbits up 33-22 with 3:23 left in the half. Western Illinois then went on an 8-3 run to trail 36-30 at halftime.
Miller and Guebert combined for 11 points in the third quarter as SDSU held a 50-47 lead. The Jackrabbits pushed that lead to eight, 62-54, with 2:26 left in the contest when Ober scored.
However, Western Illinois responded with an 11-2 run—fueled by three 3-point field goals by Maher—for a 65-64 lead with 25 seconds remaining.
South Dakota State called timeout before Thompson caught a pass at the foul line and drove for a game-winning layup.
The Jackrabbits return to action March 5 at 2:30 p.m. when they play Fort Wayne in the 2016 Summit League Championship at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls.
